Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor LA VERNE - La Verne Police officers have armed themselves with a weapon of a different kind, which can help prevent opioid overdoses.
La Verne officers are now carrying the anti-overdose drug Narcan, known under the generic name of Naloxone. The drug can be administered through the nose to patients found in severe distress from an apparent opioid overdose, the La Verne Police Department said. The issuance of the drug to officers was made possible through a partnership with Vital Medical Services. “La Verne Police Department personnel have been trained and equipped with the life-saving opioid antagonist Narcan. The U.S. is experiencing an opioid overdose epidemic and according to the surgeon general, each day we lose 115 Americans to an opioid overdose,” La Verne Police said. Naloxone inhibits opioids by binding to the opioid receptors in the human brain to block opioids, such as heroin, Fentanyl and prescription pain killers. Naloxone can restore normal breathing to someone experiencing an overdose. Law enforcement officers carry the prepackaged nasal spray variety for quick, needle-free use. “I commend Chief Nick Paz and every member of the La Verne Police Department for addressing this nation’s opioid epidemic and acting upon it to help save lives in their community,” said Steve Cooley, former Los Angeles County district attorney and chief executive for Vital Medical Services. The woman, who recently moved from Los Angeles, scurried into her attic after seeing a mother bear and cub around her home. San Dimas Sheriff’s deputies arrived and searched around her home in the 4500 block of Live Oak Canyon Road, according to deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Deputies were called to her home around 9:17 p.m. The specifics on how close the bear got to the woman are fuzzy, since she changed her story several times, Schrader said. “She told the deputies on scene a different story than she told the stringers,” Schrader said. “We believe she definitely had a bear sighting near her home, but to what extent I do not know.” The woman initially told news stringers on scene that the bears tried to get in her home, but when asked again, she changed her story. The stringer told deputies that the woman “wholeheartedly had the bajeezus scared out of her,” Schrader said. A search of the neighborhood did not yield any bears. Susan Harlow, 71, went missing from the 3600 block of Williams Avenue. Her family fears she may be depressed. She has not shown up to work and missed a doctor appointment, which is apparently unusual for her, La Verne Police said. Harlow is 5 feet 2 inches tall, 155 pounds, has a medium build, brown hair grown eyes and has a light complexion. Harlow drives a white Toyota Corolla with license plate number 7FBN146. Anyone with information on Harlow’s whereabouts is urged to call the La Verne Police Department at 909-596-1913. The suspects have taken approximately $1,800 in various merchandise, mostly consisting of denim jeans and Nintendo game controllers, from Target, 2462 Foothill Blvd., La Verne Police said. The female suspect enters the store and selects the merchandise, using a cutting tool to remove the controllers from their locked displays, La Verne Police said. In most cases, the female would place the merchandise in a basket and fled out the emergency exit to a waiting vehicle driven by the male suspect, La Verne Police said. The male suspect accompanied the female inside the store during one of the thefts. There are two vehicles associated with the five thefts, an older-model, four-door, white Toyota Avalon with tinted windows. The second is an older-model, dark green Jeep Cherokee SUV, which sports a sticker on the rear window. The female suspect is white, 20 to 25 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 100 pounds and has long, dark hair. The male is white or Hispanic, 20 to 25 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 160 pounds.
