Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LA VERNE – At the end of an extensive search, deputies did not locate the source, any victims or physical evidence of a shooting after gunfire was heard Thursday night.
A passerby flagged down a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau March 10. The passerby reportedly heard the sounds of a woman screaming near the 6300 block of Stephens Ranch Road, according to Lt. Elisabeth Sachs of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. San Dimas deputies responded around 8 p.m. to the area and reported hearing three to four rounds of gunfire and believed they were the targets, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s radio traffic. While deputies took refuge behind their patrol vehicle, backup and a helicopter arrived to safely evacuate deputies from the extremely dark location. Claremont Police and La Verne Police assisted with a perimeter while deputies conducted an extensive search, Sachs told SGV CityWatch. Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor LA VERNE - A new resident to La Verne may be having second thoughts about her new location after having a bear scare Thursday night.
The woman, who recently moved from Los Angeles, scurried into her attic after seeing a mother bear and cub around her home. San Dimas Sheriff’s deputies arrived and searched around her home in the 4500 block of Live Oak Canyon Road, according to deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Deputies were called to her home around 9:17 p.m. The specifics on how close the bear got to the woman are fuzzy, since she changed her story several times, Schrader said. “She told the deputies on scene a different story than she told the stringers,” Schrader said. “We believe she definitely had a bear sighting near her home, but to what extent I do not know.” The woman initially told news stringers on scene that the bears tried to get in her home, but when asked again, she changed her story. The stringer told deputies that the woman “wholeheartedly had the bajeezus scared out of her,” Schrader said. A search of the neighborhood did not yield any bears.

LA VERNE - A large bear is sitting comfortably in a tree while La Verne Police officers carefully watch the creature Thursday morning.
The creature was first spotted roaming around a home in the 700 block of Via Los Santos around 11:15 p.m. in San Dimas and even walked about the roof of the home, the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station said. San Dimas deputies watched the bear for 90 minutes as it walked around and entered La Verne city limits where La Verne Police took over the bear watch. The bear walked the grounds of Damien High School and even enjoyed the swimming pool before securing itself in a tree. |
