Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Like something out of an action movie, a stolen vehicle suspect burned rubber in and out of surface streets and freeways before coming to a spectacular end Tuesday.
The vehicle involved was reported stolen in Upland. At 4 p.m., Upland PD informed La Verne Police of the stolen ride’s location at Williams Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. The vehicle was intercepted, but the driver refused to stop, according to the La Verne Police Department. The chase took to the west I-10 freeway where a female passenger attempted to flee while the stolen ride was in motion, but she was pulled back in by the driver, according to the La Verne Police Department. The passenger was eventually freed from the stolen vehicle, which slowed enough for her to escape, according to the La Verne Police Department. The pursuit continued in and off the I-10 freeway until the driver clipped the front end of another vehicle at South Barranca Street and East Garvey Avenue North and overturned. The driver, who remains publicly unidentified, received injuries considered not life-threatening. The suspect was booked on suspicion of felony evading, domestic violence and false imprisonment, according to the La Verne Police Department. The collision occurred on the tracks south of Arrow Highway at San Dimas Canyon Road around 6:10 a.m. The tracks between the Pomona North station and Covina station remain closed, according to Metrolink. MTA buses are assisting riders on cancelled trains. Riders can drive down to the Downtown Pomona station and take the Riverside line to Los Angeles. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LA VERNE - Starting Tuesday, October 13, construction work ahead of the L Line light rail extension to Pomona will force a long term closure on Wheeler Avenue, authorities said recently. The work is scheduled to begin Tuesday, October 13 and last until Friday, January 1 2021. The railroad crossing at Wheeler Avenue will be rebuilt. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic will have no access past the construction area. Crews plan to work daily during double shift hours from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. with overnight and Sunday shifts being possible, according to the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority.
“Access to homes and businesses on Wheeler Ave. within the closure area north and south of the railroad crossing will be maintained at all times, as well as access to Wheeler Park, Palomares Ave., 1st St., 2nd St., and 3rd St.,” according to the Construction Authority. Bonita Avenue and Arrow Highway will remain open during construction. San Dimas Canyon Road will serve as the main detour route, the Construction Authority said. Only the HOV lane remains open. The No. 1, 2 and 3 lanes are closed for traffic. A good Samaritan follower of the driver of a white BMW as the vehicle swerved all over freeway lanes at fluctuating speeds. The driver of the BMW struck the pedestrian near a white work van on the right shoulder just before 9 p.m., according to the CHP. The white BMW was found stopped along the freeway east of the collision. It is unclear if a suspect is detained or was found at the scene. The victim is in stable condition after being hospitalized. He was located by officers a few blocks from A Street and First Street after they responded to a gunfire call just before 1 p.m., according to the La Verne Police Department. The male was shot in the lower and upper torso. An investigation continues at A Street and Arrow Highway and Bonita Avenue and Esther Avenue. Traffic remains blocked to motorists and pedestrians. It is either still unknown or hasn’t yet been publicly shared if the shooting is gang related. A traffic collision on eastbound Arrow Highway at A Street took out a power pole, causing outages for customers in the area. Police notified residents of the road closures at 2:12 a.m. All westbound lanes have been reopened, La Verne Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor LA VERNE - A woman was beaten by a man who gave her a ride from Union Station and she jumped out of his vehicle to save herself, police said.
The woman wound up in the 4500 block of Dawn Avenue around 2:20 a.m. where she requested police assistance. Police discovered visible injuries to her face and body. The woman, while being hit by the driver, suffered additional injuries when she jumped out of the moving vehicle, La Verne Police said. The woman said she was picked up at Los Angeles’ Union Station by an unknown man. The woman could not provide a description of the suspect or his vehicle, La Verne Police said. The woman was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for treatment, said Officer Peter Nicholson of the California Highway Patrol. The CHP and Los Angeles Police Department are both investigating the incident. |
