Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor MONROVIA - A theft suspect recklessly evaded authorities Wednesday night after allegedly stealing from a store.
Police tried to stop the suspect after he fled Kohl’s, 504 W. Huntington Dr., Wednesday, but he refused to pull over and fled officers recklessly, according to Lt. Tom Loy of the Monrovia Police Department. The suspect was seen concealing merchandise in his clothing by Kohl’s employees. Once he exited the parking lot, police tried to pull him over on surface streets, Monrovia Police said. The driver entered the westbound 210 freeway without headlights on, driving nearly 100 miles per hour. Police decided to end the chase, given the driver’s reckless nature because he was accused of merely committing a property crime, Loy said. Officers obtained the vehicle registration information to find the suspect’s home, but the license plate led back to a reported stolen vehicle, Loy said. The investigation is ongoing. The incident occurred July 2 around 11:23 p.m. in the 100 block of West Cypress when the victim and his wife returned home from a shopping trip. As the man was about to close the rear hatch to his vehicle, a suspect approached and attempted to take his wallet, according to the Monrovia Police Department. The suspect, who also demanded money, pushed the man down from behind. The man hit his head on the vehicle as he fell, Monrovia Police said. The man’s wife entered the garage after hearing a commotion and found her husband bleeding and a suspect already gone. The man was stabbed on the left side of his torso, Monrovia Police said. “They couldn't stop the bleeding, so they drove to a hospital and police were notified,” Monrovia Police said. The investigation is ongoing. |
