MONROVIA - At least one person was taken to a hospital after a multi-vehicle crash involving a big rig occurred Friday. Lanes 3 through 5 of the east 210 freeway just east of Buena Vista Street will be closed for an unknown duration. The HOV lane remains open, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officers first responded to the multi vehicle collision at 5:47 a.m. January 14 for a motorcyclist down in the slow lane. A big rig involved reportedly began catching fire as officers were dispatched and possibly one other vehicle was already fully engulfed, according to CHP traffic logs. A motorcycle became lodged underneath the trailer the semi was hauling. Officers called for a heavy duty tow truck to lift the trailer off of the motorcycle. The extent of injuries is not publicly clear. “An Evacuation Warning means that there is potential threat to life and/or property, and those who require additional time to evacuate and those with pets and livestock should leave now,” according to the City of Monrovia in a written statement. A flash flood watch was issued by the National Weather Service for areas affected by the Bobcat Fire, effective from 3 a.m. Tuesday, December 14, to 6 p.m., according to the City of Monrovia. Cities and county authorities are preparing for possible debris flows in areas affected by recent brush fires. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works issued a Phase II Debris and Mudflow Forecast for the above-mentioned areas, according to the City of Monrovia. The National Weather Service has forecast a strong storm expected to bring heavy rainfall over Monday night after 10 p.m., December 13 and through Tuesday, December 14. A wind advisory is set to begin at 12 a.m. December 14 and will last until 3 p.m. Tuesday, rain is expected before 10 a.m. with more rain and possibly a thunderstorm lasting through the day, according to the National Weather Service. Sandbags and gravel are available for Monrovia residents at Recreation Park, 620 S. Shamrock Ave., in the lot off East Olive Avenue. Residents must shovel their own gravel and are encouraged to bring a shovel and wear gloves and eye protection, according to the City of Monrovia. The Hillside Wilderness Preserve and Monrovia Canyon Park will be closed until further notice, according to the City of Monrovia. A 50 percent chance of showers is possible before 10 p.m. Tuesday. Wednesday is expected to be mostly sunny. Normal train service has resumed, according to LA Metro. MONROVIA - A suspicious item on an L Line train has forced authorities to temporarily stop service the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Saturday. Deputies with the Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau were alerted to the item at 4:15 p.m. September 25. We approach the item to inspect it and deemed suspicious enough to hold train service, according to the Transit Services Bureau. It was not immediately clear if the suspicious item was found on a northbound or southbound L Line train. The Sheriff’s Arson/Explosives Detail was called to the scene. The 210 freeway off ramps to Myrtle Avenue have been closed for at least the next three hours due to the investigation, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced that there is no train service between Arcadia Station and Duarte/City of Hope Station. Bus shuttles have been requested to transport passengers. A 17-year-old male was arrested April upon his release from the Pasadena City jail April 15. Tanaj Johnson, 20, was arrested April 19 as he was released from the Pasadena jail on an unrelated charge. Christian Hall, 20, had been arrested May 23 by Pasadena Police Department on an unrelated charge and is being held without bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Darione Jones, 25, was murdered March 29 in the 100 block of East Los Angeles Avenue just before 5:30 p.m. Detectives with the Monrovia and Pasadena Police Departments aided Sheriff’s homicide investigators with identifying the suspects. The Eastlake District Attorney’s Office filed one count of murder against the teen with the allegation he personally used a firearm, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Community Violence Reduction Division filed one count of murder against Tanaj Johnson April 21 with the allegation that he personally used a firearm and one count of animal cruelty because he shot a dog during the Monrovia shooting, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. Johnson was also named a suspect in the February 14 shooting of a 10-year-old boy in Pasadena, Pasadena Police said. The DA’s Community Violence Reduction Division filed one count of murder against Christian Hall May 25 with the allegation he personally used a firearm, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. Hall is being held without bail ahead an appearance in Pasadena Superior Court June 3. Johnson is being held in lieu of nearly $4 million bail ahead of a May 27 appearance in Pasadena Superior Court on a variety of charges. Police are setting up a perimeter search near where the crash happened after witnesses reported at least three men fleeing across freeway lanes and into business and residential areas below, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. The crash occurred just after 11:30 a.m. on the eastbound 210 freeway near South Myrtle Avenue. A Sig Alert has been issued for one hour for the HOV, No. 1 and 2 lanes of traffic. A vehicle only described as possibly white in color, overturned and eventually caught fire. A witness under the freeway reported three men running from the freeway. The Monrovia Police Department received multiple calls of the suspects fleeing in the area. The shooting occurred in the 100 block of East Los Angeles Avenue. One person was fatally shot. He died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. January 29. Three possible suspects fled the area in a four-door Honda Civic, according to Monrovia Police radio traffic. Assisting Monrovia Police with a containment are the Arcadia and Sierra Madre police departments. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau arrived on scene just before 7 p.m. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONROVIA - Two people were hospitalized after at least one suspect opened fire on them near Huntington Drive and Mayflower Avenue Saturday night. The victims were shot on the street as they neared a McDonald’s, 480 W. Huntington Dr., just before 10 p.m. December 5. The victims fled in a vehicle and wound up at a residence where police and paramedics converged to provide aid, according to Monrovia Police radio traffic. One victim may have been shot in an arm, the second victim may have been shot in the back, according to preliminary information. It is not clear how many crime scenes there may be. Arcadia officers assisting Monrovia Police found ballistics damage at one building, while more evidence was located in the 300 block of West Duarte Road. As Duarte officials advised their residents, Monrovia officials are strongly encouraging residents to gather their essential belongings, pets and prepare for potential evacuations, should a Santa Ana wind event drive the fire south into the foothill neighborhoods. Monrovia city officials said that evacuations, once ordered, will occur in two phases, phase 1 involving all residents north of Hillcrest Boulevard and north of Greystone Avenue to evacuate. Phase 2 evacuations will involve all residents between Hillcrest Boulevard and Greystone Avenue, South to foothill Boulevard, according to Monrovia city officials. Affected residence will be alerted to the emergency alert system, as well as Monrovia police officers and supporting agencies. Monrovia’s community center will be open Tuesday, September 8 at 7 a.m. As an information and cooling center. “Residents should make evacuation plans now, including overnight accommodations. Evacuation sites for those displaced are being prepared,” Monrovia city officials said. “Those with large animals, horses and cattle, should begin to move those animals now. Do not wait until the Evacuation Order to begin moving them out of the area. Accommodations are being made for animals at the Pomona Fairgrounds and Santa Anita Racetrack (limited capacity),” Monrovia city officials said. The collision occurred around 8:46 a.m. at California Avenue and Duarte Road April 15. Monrovia Firefighters declares both victims dead at 9 a.m., according to Ramon Montenegro of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau. The Monrovia Police Department is asking drivers to avoid California Avenue and Duarte Road. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is providing free bus service between the Monrovia and Duarte L Line stations Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONROVIA - Fire officials announced a person of interest has been detained in a string of four suspicious fires ignited in the last two days. The two most recent fires damaged three wood-framed homes, killing a pet cat and causing at least two people to be displaced, said Chief Brad Dover of the Monrovia Fire Department. A house under construction was found fully engulfed early Wednesday, March 6 in the 700 block of West Colorado Boulevard around 12:35 a.m. Flames also caused damage at a neighboring home, which was red-tagged. The front porch of a home was torched March 7 at 812 W. Walnut Ave. Firefighters were dispatched at 12:03 a.m.
A person of interest was detained Thursday morning around 7 a.m. Detectives are seeking information from the person on interest regarding knowledge or involvement in the arsons, according to Monrovia Police Chief Alan Sanvictores. The Walnut Avenue home was occupied at the time the fire ignited. The resident was alerted by a smoke detector. He attempted to extinguish the fire, which extended into the structure itself and ultimately killed a pet cat. The resident suffered smoke inhalation, Dover said. Two minor fires extinguished were quickly determined to also be incendiary in nature, Dover said. The Verdugo Arson Task Force investigated the fires along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Los Angeles Fire Department, Dover said. A K9 search indicated a fire accelerant was used in the fires, Dover said. The person of interest has not been arrested. |
