Analysis was needed to determine whether the phenomenon that caused considerable damage to more than 10 buildings was either a land spout or a tornado, with meteorologists choosing the latter. There is no EF, ore strength rating, yet for the tornado that struck in the around 11:20 a.m. March 22. Meteorologists need further analysis of the damage before determining the tornado’s strength, according to the National Weather Service. The more than 10 buildings affected by the tornado have reportedly been redtagged, according Mike Rogers, KCAL 9 assignment editor. Heavy traffic along Washington Blvd near Vail and Maple street intersections due to power outage caused by tornado. Drivers are being asked to avoid Washington Boulevard between Greenwood Avenue and Vail Avenue, according to the Montebello Police Department. One of the first reports of the tornado occurred around Washington Boulevard near South Maple Avenue. A more detailed report is expected this evening. What is A Land Spout? While all land spouts are technically tornadoes, there are unique features that separate the two phenomenon. Traditional tornadoes form from supercell thunderstorms with wind rotation emanating from the thunderstorm itself. Wind speeds can reach 200 miles per hour. Land spout rotation occurs much closer to the ground, usually along what is known as a boundary, which is a separation between differing air masses. The boundary can create unstable weather. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor UPDATE, 9:58 a.m.: Officers responded to a business in the 400 block of West Washington Boulevard at 3:48 a.m. to investigate a burglary alarm call. On arriving on scene, officers saw a man inside of the business. He attempted to flee the business through the rear door but retreated back inside to escape officers positions behind the location, according to the Montebello Police Department.
“As Officers entered the building a shotgun was recovered and Officers heard the subject in the crawl space between the ceiling and roof of the store,” according to the Montebello Police Department in a written statement. “It is unknown if the subject is armed with another weapon and the subject has refused to cooperate with police orders to exit.” MONTEBELLO - All east and west lanes of West Washington Boulevard between Bluff Road and Carob Way are closed while authorities try to get a barricaded man to surrender. Crisis negotiators and the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau are working on communicating with the man, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. All eastbound lanes of the eastbound 60 freeway at East Markland Drive remain closed as well as the No. 1 and 2 lanes of the westbound 60 freeway at Paramount Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol. A Sig alert is in effect for an unknown duration. The CHP has yet to reveal the circumstances that led up to the officer shooting. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEBELLO - A 2018 Ford Explorer police SUV was discovered missing from its designated parking stall at the Montebello Police Department Tuesday. The discovery was made around 3 p.m. May 21. During the investigation, detectives learned the vehicle was taken May 17 at 2:23 a.m. A suspect was caught on camera driving away with the police SUV within 10 seconds of entering it, according to the Montebello Police Department. A loaded AR-15 rifle, a loaded shotgun and less lethal shotgun were inside the stolen police SUV, Montebello Police said. All keys for the SUV are accounted for.
The 2018 Ford Explorer police SUV is painted black and features a white roof and white doors. The SUV is designated as Unit 9 and has a California Exempt license plate number of 1429238. The words “Montebello Police” are featured on both sides of the vehicle and on the rear. The number 9 is located on the roof with the letters “MTB” and on the front fenders and the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle is also equipped with an overhead light bar, Montebello Police said. Detectives are attempting to use GPS and other methods to locate the vehicle. Local repair shops and other vendors were contacted in an effort to find the SUV, which has been entered into the stolen vehicle registry, Montebello Police said. BREAKING NEWS: Man Allegedly Armed with Shotgun Dies in Montebello Officer-Involved Shooting5/9/2019 Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEBELLO - A man hospitalized after suffering at least one gunshot wound in an officer-involved shooting died Thursday. The man was confronted by officers near 2nd Street and Victoria Avenue around 1:30 p.m. May 9. Officers were called to a report of suspects possibly smoking marijuana and drinking. The first Montebello officer on scene saw a man carrying a weapon. As backup was called, the officer-involved shooting occurred, Montebello Police said.
It is unclear if the suspect shot is one of the suspects sought for public intoxication. Victoria will be blocked from 1st Street to 3rd Avenue. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will be handling the investigation. The crash occurred in the 1100 block of West Whittier Boulevard around 1:30 p.m. The driver was extricated from the vehicle uninjured. It does not appear anyone else was injured either, according to the Montebello Fire Department. The exact address given initially is 1105 W. Whittier Blvd., which is listed as Fiesta Mexicana.

The fire was reported at 6 a.m. at 1500 Chapin Road December 29. Vernon firefighters are working with Montebello firefighters in unison to quell the pallet fire, according to authorities. The fire continues to burn more than two hours, according to Montebello Fire dispatch traffic. Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor MONTEBELLO - A Ford SUV rolled over and landed back on its wheels on the eastbound 60 freeway at Paramount Boulevard Sunday.
The collision occurred in the No. 3 and 4 lanes of the 60 freeway at Paramount Avenue just before 2 p.m. Up to six patients were inside the SUV when it rolled over. A 2-month-old child was also in the SUV, according to the Montebello Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol. Passing motorists have stopped on the freeway to help the occupants out of the SUV, the CHP said. The CHP preliminarily learned the SUV was possibly driving at a high rate of speed and was cut off by a Kia. The SUV’s driver over-corrected and rolled the vehicle.
