Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEBELLO – Police announced Monday the arrest of an East Los Angeles man accused of fatally hitting a pedestrian and refusing to stop to help. Christopher Artega, 27, was found in UplandJuly 29 driving the black Scion XB described by witnesses in the July 26 collision. He was stopped in Ontario and taken into custody, according to the Montebello Police Department. Detectives used “various investigative techniques” to track down Artega, Montebello Police said.
The fatal crash occurred around 2:52 p.m. July 26 at Garfield Avenue and Via Paseo. A woman in her early 20s was found in the roadway gravely injured. Paramedics provided lifesaving support, but she died at the scene. The victim was identified by coroner investigators as 22-year-old Angeles Palomino. She died from multiple blunt force traumatic injuries. Investigators obtained a filing of felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter against Artega with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Artega is being held in lieu of $85,000 bail. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor REGION - An internal Montebello Police investigation is underway after one of the department’s lieutenants crashed while allegedly driving under the influence in Montclair. Christopher Cervantes, 47, reportedly crashed into the rear of another vehicle August 21 at San Bernardino Street an Monte Vista Avenue around 8:10 a.m., according to the Montclair Police Department. No one was injured. The lieutenant was placed on administrative leave. Cervantes, who is no stranger to run-ins with law enforcement, was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. He was released later that Wednesday.
In 2015, Cervantes was investigated for crashing into a tree in Diamond Bar. An investigation revealed acetaminophen/butalbital/codeine and morphine in his system. Cervantes reportedly had valid reasons for the prescriptions. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office declined to file charges in the Diamond Bar crash, later stating that the office lacked the expertise to prosecute the specifics of the case. Cervantes was arrested by San Diego Police, accused of public drunkenness and resisting arrest in 2011. The incident resulted in Cervantes not being charged. The crash occurred in the 1100 block of West Whittier Boulevard around 1:30 p.m. The driver was extricated from the vehicle uninjured. It does not appear anyone else was injured either, according to the Montebello Fire Department. The exact address given initially is 1105 W. Whittier Blvd., which is listed as Fiesta Mexicana.

Tatsuyoshi Nakasone of Montebello was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Nakasone died at the scene of the crash at Wilcox Avenue and Via Campo. The crash occurred around 4:14 p.m. Details about how the crash unfolded, and if any arrests were made, are still in short supply. An SUV and a car collided head on at Montebello Boulevard and Liberty Avenue around 9 p.m. October 28. One of the vehicles traveling south on Montebello Boulevard, for unknown reasons, veered into a northbound vehicle, according to the Montebello Police Department. Two occupants in one vehicle, Montebello man Jose Holguin, 22, and San Gabriel woman Nicole Brown, 26 died in one vehicle. The victim in the second vehicle has yet to be identified. Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor MONTEBELLO - A Ford SUV rolled over and landed back on its wheels on the eastbound 60 freeway at Paramount Boulevard Sunday.
The collision occurred in the No. 3 and 4 lanes of the 60 freeway at Paramount Avenue just before 2 p.m. Up to six patients were inside the SUV when it rolled over. A 2-month-old child was also in the SUV, according to the Montebello Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol. Passing motorists have stopped on the freeway to help the occupants out of the SUV, the CHP said. The CHP preliminarily learned the SUV was possibly driving at a high rate of speed and was cut off by a Kia. The SUV’s driver over-corrected and rolled the vehicle. The Kia may have taken off from the scene. |
