Armando Garcia, 29, a parolee convicted in 2019 in state court on theft and burglary charges, was named Friday in a criminal complaint filed in United States District Court. Garcia allegedly stole the semi-armored Humvee midday Monday before Pomona officers found the unlicensed vehicle, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Garcia was charged with theft of government property. Garcia refused to stop and led officers on a four-minute chase, driving at excessive speed, running red lights, stop signs, failing to signal for turns and driving in opposing lanes, according to the criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court. Garcia eventually stopped in a residential neighborhood on East Kingsley Avenue and was taken into custody. Inside the Humvee, valued at more than $200,000, was a large pair of bolt cutters and a cut army-approved padlock. The latter is fixed with a steel wire to prevent turning of the steering wheel, the criminal complaint stated. If convicted as charged, Garcia faces a possible statutory maximum of 10 years in federal prison. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - The California Highway Patrol arrested a driver September 7 after he allegedly led Claremont Police and CHP officers on a chase throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
Claremont officers initially pursued Anthony Orlando Franco, 33, who was driving in a stolen vehicle. The CHP was notified of the chase as it was west on the I-10 freeway west of Indian Hill Boulevard, according to Officer Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. CHP officers took over the pursuit of a black 2017 Kia Soul on the west 210 freeway at Grand Avenue, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The chase took to surface streets through Glendora, Covina, Irwindale, Pomona, La Verne, Claremont, Baldwin Park and West Covina. He also allegedly fled in opposing lanes of traffic, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The suspect also traversed the I-10, 210, 57, 71 and 605 freeways. The pursuit briefly reentered the 210 freeway eastbound from Sunflower Avenue in Glendora. The CHP attempted to disable the Kia Soul with the Pursuit Intervention Technique, but the vehicle kept moving and exited onto southbound San Dimas Avenue in San Dimas. While westbound in the area of Walnut Avenue and Arrow Highway, the driver reportedly struck the front of a CHP officer’s patrol vehicle, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The CHP canceled the chase due to the driver’s reckless nature. Claremont officers located the suspect and continued the pursuit into Pomona where the suspect abandoned the Soul and fled on foot at the American Inn & Suites, 310 E. Foothill Blvd. The Kia rolled and crashed into two parked vehicles, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. Franco was caught shortly after running and was medically cleared before being booked at the Inmate Reception Center on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, assaulting a peace officer, felony evading an officer, being in possession of a stolen vehicle and driving under the influence of drugs, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. Franco was additionally booked for warrants related to felony evading and parole violations. The rider led the California Highway Patrol on the pursuit after East Los Angeles CHP officers attempted to pull the suspect over near the northbound 605 freeway and Lower Azusa Road, according to Sgt. Rosenthal of the Baldwin Park CHP Office. The pursuit exited onto northbound Azusa Avenue from the 210 freeway and straight up to Highway 39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road) where the rider ascended the mountain road at 80 to 90 miles per hour. The rider fled his motorcycle at the Coldbrook Campground, Rosenthal said. A passenger was detained, but it was unclear if East Los Angeles CHP officers arrested the passenger, Rosenthal said. Misty Dennis, 27, pleaded not guilty to two counts each of kidnapping, child detention with right to custody, child abuse and one count each of fleeing a pursuing a peace officer and resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer, said Greg Risling of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Dennis was seeing her children at the Department of Children and Family Services in Ladera Heights March 27. Dennis allegedly took off with the children, whom she does not have custody of, when a worker’s back was turned and drove off. Authorities were able to “ping” the woman’s cell phone and pinpointed her location to Whittier. Authorities located Dennis and her children, but she drove off and led authorities on a pursuit, sometimes reaching speeds of 90 miles per hour. The pursuit, which briefly spanned the northbound 605 freeway, wound its way on surface streets into Bassett where Dennis collided with a Foothill Transit bus. Dennis fled the crashed car, leaving her children behind. Dennis is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing set for May 14. The woman is driving a reported stolen green Toyota Camry. California Highway Patrol units from the Baldwin Park area office took over the chase as it sped north on the 71 freeway at Holt Avenue about 50 minutes ago. The CHP attempted a PIT maneuver near Azusa Avenue on the westbound 210 freeway, but the suspect drove away and evaded them briefly going east in westbound lanes. The chase is currently southbound on the 405 freeway Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor REGION – A woman was arrested by Baldwin Park CHP officers after stealing a Los Angeles Fire Department paramedic ambulance and evading authorities on SoCal freeways Tuesday morning.
The unidentified woman stole the ambulance as it sat vacant outside California Hospital Medical Center in Downtown Los Angeles around 12:31 a.m. The woman led the LAPD and CHP on a pursuit, which travelled along the 60 freeway in the San Gabriel Valley until she was taken into custody along the 71 freeway near Central Avenue and Soquel Canyon Road. A Los Angeles city paramedic crew had just dropped off a seriously-ill patient to the hospital, 1338 S. Hope St. The suspect, a Black woman, then took the 2008 Ford E-Series ambulance, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department. CHP officers took over the pursuit on the eastbound 60 freeway at Santa Anita Avenue around 12:47 p.m. according to Officer Tony Polizzi of the California Highway Patrol. The pursuit ended around 1:16 a.m. on the right shoulder of the 71 freeway near Soquel Canyon Road after the suspect stopped and surrendered. The paramedic ambulance appears to have not sustained damage, Humphrey said. Authorities are searching for the suspects who fled the car on foot in Hesperia around 8:40 p.m., according CHP radio traffic. The two men carjacked their victim in the area of Verdugo Road and Broadview Drive. CHP officers from the Altadena office located the carjacked Chrysler at 8:02 p.m. east on the 210 freeway at Lincoln Avenue, according to Officer Alex Rubio of the California Highway Patrol. The driver fled CHP Altadena and Baldwin Park officers at high-speed, sometimes in excess of 100 miles per hour. It is unclear if the fleeing suspects have been apprehended. The suspects allegedly hit the driver of a grey Dodge Ram 2500 during the pursuit, with the collision occurring at the east 210 freeway and the 605 interchange. No one was injured. |
