Abel Alexander Ruiz died by hanging, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Ruiz was a San Gabriel High School student and football player for the Matadors having graduated in 2022. “There are no words. Just deep sorrow. Abel was such a kind person. He was the kid who stayed after to pick up. The kid who stayed late for extra reps. He was the best teammate. I’m so heartbroken,” according to San Gabriel High School Varsity Football Head Coach Kevin Encinas in a social media post. “If you knew Abel he was an incredibly smart boy with the sweetest attitude who always put others before himself. He touched the hearts of those around him. He was like a son/little brother to everyone he met,” according to Sasha Ruiz on Abel’s gofundme fundraiser. First responders were called to the pedestrian bridge east of New Avenue just before 11 a.m. Sunday, March 19. Firefighters reported a body hanging from the bridge and within minutes stated the operation would be a body retrieval, according to San Gabriel Fire Department radio traffic. Officer Moises Marroquin of the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Center told SGV CityWatch that a Sig Alert in effect was due to a hanging on the pedestrian bridge. at 12:11 p.m., the CHP stated the eastbound express lanes off ramp to New Avenue and the westbound express onramp will continue to be blocked. the westbound I-10 mainline has been reopened. San Gabriel Police officers located the dead man in the 1400 block of Prospect Avenue after responding to a gunfire call around 8:10 p.m. January 26. He was shot in the upper torso, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. “Officers learned a second male Asian adult with a gunshot wound, was transported to a nearby hospital. Officers believe both victims are related to the same shooting incident. The second victim is being treated for non-life threatening injuries,” according to the the Sheriff’s Information Bureau in a written statement. The shooting reportedly took place at 6:12 p.m. in the 500 block of West Norwood Place. The victim, only described as a male adult, was taken to a local hospital for treatment but he was later pronounced dead according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. No other information is available. The shooting took place around 11:17 p.m. in the 1800 block of San Gabriel Boulevard. The unidentified suspect died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. No one else was injured. A little further south, a man was shot outside of a motel in the 2100 block of San Gabriel Boulevard in Rosemead around 4 p.m. Saturday. The man later died after being hospitalized. Dennis Anthony Perez, 48, a San Gabriel man, was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run, San Gabriel Police said. An anonymous community tip led investigators to Perez and his blue truck, used in the deadly October 26 crash. Perez has more than three DUI arrests previously, San Gabriel Police said, but it is unclear if alcohol played a roll in the crash. He is being held in the Inmate Reception in Los Angeles and is awaiting a scheduled appearance in Alhambra Municipal Court November 1. Meiyu Li and her granddaughter Paisley Chen were the pedestrians killed by the driver of a Chevrolet S-10 Xtreme pickup truck Friday, October 26. The grandmother was pushing the girl in a stroller when the driver, who is still outstanding, struck them in the intersection of Del Mar Avenue and Live Oak Street, authorities said. Investigators said the truck is black or midnight blue, features an extended cab, chrome rims, rear window tint, decals and should have front end damage, San Gabriel Police said. The grandmother and granddaughter were in a marked crosswalk when they were struck, San Gabriel Police said. The driver of a dark or midnight blue Chevy S10 Xtreme pickup truck hit the woman who was pushing her granddaughter in a stroller in a marked crosswalk at Live Oak Street and Del Mar Avenue, according to the San Gabriel Police Department. The pickup featured an extended cab, chrome rims and rear window tint. The truck should have considerable damage concentrated on the right front side, San Gabriel Police said. The collision occurred around 9:35 p.m. Friday, October 26. Images from the scene painted a tragic picture: personal items strewn across the road, including a stroller. The victim, De Si Tu of San Gabriel, was found laying in the street around 6:15 a.m. on Valley Boulevard at Stevens Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the San Gabriel Police Department. Police found surveillance footage that revealed a small, white SUV leaving the area, San Gabriel Police said.
