CITRUS - The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department recently released video of a deputy shooting a distraught man allegedly attempting to stab him May 20.

The shooting took place in the 5500 block of North Orangecrest Avenue in the unincorporated community of Citrus. The suspect, 38-year-old Dilen Flamino, either successfully or attempted to cut himself with a kitchen knife.

The caller told a dispatcher that Flamino intended to get deputies to shoot him.

As deputies began surrounding the home where Flamino was holed up, he exited and was confronted by a deputy. The deputy withdrew his service weapon at Flamino, who was armed with a knife, and ordered him to get down on the ground.

Flamino instead charged at the deputy who then shot Flamino at least twice. Eventually he dropped the knife while writhing in pain. Deputies surrounded him and cuffed him. He was treated by deputies until firefighter paramedics transported him to a hospital.

The Sheriff’s Department is investigating this shooting while the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation as well. 

Findings from both investigations will be presented to the county DA’s Justice Integrity Division to determine if the use of force was appropriate. The Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Bureau will then complete an administrative investigation.

The internal affairs investigation will then be presented to the Executive Force Review Committee to also determine if the deputy’s actions were appropriate.

CITRUS - The man shot and wounded by a deputy Wednesday afternoon allegedly attempted to kill himself with a three-inch knife before advancing on a deputy.

The confrontation and shooting occurred in the 5500 block of Orangecrest Avenue in unincorporated Azusa May 20. Deputies were called to a reported suicide attempt, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The shooting occurred just before 3:30 p.m.

“Deputies arrived on scene at which point an adult male, armed with a knife, exited a side gate of the residence. The male refused to comply with any orders given by deputy personnel to surrender the knife and subsequently charged at the nearest deputy situated near a patrol vehicle,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in a written statement. “A deputy involved shooting occurred and the male was struck by gunfire.”

The suspect was hospitalized and last listed in critical condition.

The Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating.

The Office of the Inspector General will provide independent oversight throughout the investigation, while details regarding the shooting are reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee with input provided by the Constitutional Policing Advisors. 

At the end of the investigation, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine if immediate action is warranted.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine if criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.

CITRUS - Gunfire occurred after deputies responded to a call in a residential area Wednesday. 

The deputy shooting occurred in the 5500 block of Orangecrest Avenue in unincorporated Azusa. For unspecified reasons a deputy opened fire during the response, according to Lt. Julie Piendo of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station.

It is not immediately clear if anyone was wounded by gunfire. Pinedo was somewhat evasive, but noted that the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau would be taking over the investigation.

​The incident occurred just before 3:30 p.m. May 20.

The Los Angeles County fire department noted that one person was transported to an area hospital from the neighborhood. What injuries the patient suffered are not immediately clear.

at a nearby school near North Cerritos Avenue and East Gladstone Street, deputies greeted detectives from the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau around 5 p.m. as they amassed to begin their investigation.

CITRUS - Bomb squad technicians removed a suspicious-looking metal item that was found by a construction crew working in a residential rear yard Sunday.

The roughly foot-long rusted item resembled a replica display rocket, or missile and was deemed to be inert, according to Sgt. Duarte of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station.

The incident unfolded in the 18300 block of Woodcroft Street in the unincorporated area of Azusa earlier in the day.

The Sheriff’s Arson/Explosives Detail responded and made the determination that the item was not dangerous. It was removed from the neighborhood, Duarte told SGV CityWatch.

First responders cleared the scene before 9:30 p.m.

CITRUS - A man was found dead, the likely victim of a natural death Friday afternoon.

Sheriff’s deputies were sent to a medical rescue call on North Rockvale Avenue at East Renwick Road at 5:23 p.m. September 26. The man was unresponsive when checked by deputies and soon declared dead , according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station.

The man was described as being older in age. Deputies remain on scene until Investigators with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner arrives to claim the body.

CITRUS - Two men fled into a home Monday once they reached a dead end at the termination of a pursuit, but both surrendered after an hours-long barricade.

The driver of a black Kia Sorrento is a known gang member with a felony weapons warrant. Officers attempted to pull him over in Montebello, but he refused and led officers on a chase on surface streets, freeways and ended with a crash into the home near Azusa, according to Michael Chee, director of public affairs and information technology with Montebello.

The suspect was chased on to the northbound 605 freeway from the Whittier area just before 7 a.m. The pursuit took to the eastbound 210 freeway where the suspect exited onto Citrus Avenue in Azusa.

After virtually circling several neighborhoods, the driver stopped at a dead end at Rockvale Avenue just south of the 210 freeway. The driver and his female passenger fled on foot through a residential yard and into a home in the 6900 block of Cedarglen Drive.

The occupied home where the barricade took place was known to the driver, Chee told SGV CityWatch.

Family members arrived near the scene. A deputy shuttled them to a command post and phone contact was made with those inside the home in a plea to get them to surrender without any trouble.

Members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau arrived to get the suspects to surrender peacefully, which the suspects did.

The second suspect was arrested for an outstanding warrant, Chee told SGV CityWatch.

Two other occupants of the home were briefly detained, but not arrested.

Later in the day, Montebello detectives wrote and served a search warrant for the home where the suspects were barricaded and weapons were found, Chee told SGV CityWatch.

The suspects’ names were not readily available.

CITRUS - A suspect allegedly carrying a modified AR-15 was caught after running from deputies in unincorporated Azusa.

The suspect was spotted in the 5000 of Fenimore Street, according to Lt. Elisabeth Sachs of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station.

“Deputies were patrolling the unincorporated area of Azusa when they encountered a male with unknown object in his hands. After further investigation, the deputies recognized the object to be a modified AR-15 rifle. The subject tossed the weapon and ran,” according to the Sheriff’s San Dimas Station in a social media post.

Deputies contained the area and with the help of a K-9 unit and the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau, the suspect was found and arrested. 

*NOTE: Despite speaking personally with four different supervisors at the San Dimas Station over a period of several days, this reporter was unable to obtain the day and time of the incident and the suspect’s booking information.

CITRUS – Three people were arrested while a search warrant was being executed near Azusa late Wednesday night.
 
The search warrant was being served in the 18000 block of East Newburght Street. The warrant was related to illegal gambling, according to Lt. Elisabeth Sachs of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station.
 
A large law enforcement presence was in the area after three male adults ran from a home. It is unclear if anyone remains at-large, or if additional arrests were made.
 
The search warrant was served by what Sachs described as an auxiliary under cover unit.

CITRUS - A shooting in an unincorporated neighborhood late Memorial Day left an automobile with ballistics damage, a Sheriff’s sergeant said.

The shooting occurred just before 11 p.m. in the 18700 block of East Petunia Street May 31. Investigating deputies were unable to coax any other information out of the people affected by the shooting as they seemed somewhat uncooperative, according to Sgt. Wong of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station.

Wong did not immediately know exactly how many rounds were fired. Wong does not believe any surrounding vehicles or homes were struck by any stray bullets. No injuries were reported.

There was no suspect or vehicle description available.

CITRUS - One victim was transported to an area hospital Saturday night after being hit by gunfire, Sheriff’s deputies said.

The shooting took place on East Fondale Street near Glenfinnan Avenue in the unincorporated community of Citrus May 29. Firefighters were dispatched to the location at 11:16 p.m.

The victim seemed to be uncooperative with investigators who arrived to the scene. The location of the shooting is allegedly known for gang activity, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s radio traffic.

No other details were available Sunday morning.

A sergeant with the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station stated to SGV CityWatch that the investigation was being handled by the Sheriff’s Industry Station. The Industry Station day shift supervisor was unaware if the investigation was being handled by his detectives, but stated that the station’s Operation Safe Streets bureau could possibly have taken the investigation.
