COVINA - A woman with daughter in tow was attempting to escape her husband when a multi-vehicle crash occurred Wednesday morning.

The suspect, 42-year-old Michael Person, was allegedly pursuing his wife during a domestic fight. The chase ended in a five-vehicle crash, according to Lt. David Rodriguez of the Covina Police Department.

The crash occurred around 5:50 a.m. March 18.

The wife and daughter fled their home in the 1300 block of North Edenfield Avenue. The husband chased after them.

During the vehicle chase, Person allegedly rammed the wife’s vehicle multiple times, causing her vehicle to strike several other vehicles on the road. 

The wife received major injures in the crash. The teen daughter riding with her received minor injuries, Rodriguez told SGV CityWatch.

Eight people total were injured, Rodriguez told SGV CityWatch.

Person reportedly escaped on foot and attempted to hide nearby. 

After roughly two and a half hours, Person was found and arrested, Rodriguez told SGV CityWatch.

Person faces attempted murder and other charges.

COVINA - As many as four people were injured in a hit-and-run crash that left debris strewn across the road Wednesday.

Police believe domestic violence somehow led to the five-vehicle collision on Hollenbeck Avenue south of Cypress Street. The crash occurred around 5:50 a.m. March 18.

Four vehicles that remained at the scene were all heavily damaged. One vehicle was overturned.

A fifth vehicle reportedly fled the scene and may have rammed into the other crashed vehicles to escape and police are searching for it.

A description of the fifth vehicle and its occupant was not immediately available.

COVINA - Investigators are determining the cause of death for a man found dead in a vehicle Sunday.

The victim, who has yet to be publicly identified, was in the driver’s seat in a shopping center parking lot in the 400 block of South Citrus Avenue March 1.

First responders were called around 12:47 p.m.

The man, said to be in his 60s, was there long enough for some decomposition to occur, according to Lt. David Rodriguez of the Covina Police Department.

An odor wafting from the vehicle likely drew attention to it.

There were no obvious signs of foul play.

COVINA - Police are searching for a gunman who fired a weapon in a Covina neighborhood Saturday night.

An unknown gunman fired as many as six shots in an alleyway near Puente Avenue and Citrus Avenue. Police did not find any victims, or any evidence that anyone was struck by gunfire, according to Sgt. Hulsey of the Covina Police Department.

Police responded to a report of gunfire around 10:16 p.m. February 7. Officers located shell casings. One unoccupied vehicle was hit by gunfire, Hulsey told SGV CityWatch.

It is not immediately clear who the intended target may have been.

UPDATE: All affected lanes have since reopened to traffic.

UPDATE, 6:44 a.m.: The HOV and No. 1 lanes are now open. This collision is now a fatal. The county medical examiner is en route.

​COVINA - A reported injury crash has led authorities to shut down all eastbound lanes of the I-10 Freeway near Forest Lawn cemetery Sunday morning.

The crash occurred on the eastbound I-10 Freeway just west of Via Verde Avenue. The California Highway Patrol was dispatched around 4:50 a.m. January 25.

The Sig Alert for all eastbound lanes may last until 6:30 a.m.

It is not immediately clear how many people have been injured in the crash.

A dark-colored sedan reportedly struck an unspecified portion of guardrail on the right shoulder. At least one of the vehicle’s occupants was waving down passing motorists, trying to get some help before CHP arrived, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs.

COVINA - Beef between rival La Puente gang bangers led to a crazy chase and shooting last year and the suspect was recently apprehended.

John Patrick Lopez, 26, was officially charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of shooting at an inhabited dwelling, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records.

Lopez was additionally charged with a serious felony enhancement, two counts each of a prior serious/violent felony conviction, two counts of special allegations of personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury, and one count of a special allegation of personal use of a firearm.

Lopez was found driving in La Verne January 7 and arrested.

The shooting occurred June 29, 2025. Lopez and another driver, both of whom are gang members, recognized each other. At some point a shooting occurred, taking place outside Royal Oaks Middle School, 303 S. Glendora Ave., according to the Covina Police Department.

Lopez chased the other driver, a 26-year-old La Puente man, around Covina streets for two miles, wounding his adversary in the leg. The other driver crashed into another vehicle, according to the Covina Police Department.

Lopez made an initial appearance in Pomona Superior Court January 9 and is scheduled for a January 27 arraignment and plea, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records.

COVINA - Police successfully arrested a man who is accused of threatening family members and firing off a shotgun inside a home October 27.

A woman called and claimed her boyfriend, identified at 42-year-old Edwin Maldonado Alicea, was drunk and belligerent. During the call with Covina dispatchers, a shotgun blast was heard over the phone. Dispatchers determined that the suspect had a shotgun, rifle and pistols registered to him, according Covina Police radio recordings.

Police arrived and surrounded the home. All occupants were able to safely escape to waiting officers.

The suspect allegedly refused to surrender, setting off a lengthy barricade.

SWAT officers made use of exterior and interior drones to get eyes on the suspect while a K9 assisted with a search.

Maldonado eventually surrendered. He was booked on suspicion of assault with a firearm on a person, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, and threats of violence, according to Covina Police booking records.

Maldonado posted bond and was released October 29, according to Los Angeles County booking records.

COVINA - The county medical examiner named the woman gunned down at the storage facility she worked at as detectives announced the arrest of a suspect.

Patricia Villa, a 44-year-old Alhambra resident, was found at One Stop Storage, 1432 N. Barranca Ave., by family members who went looking for her. Surveillance video reportedly indicated Villa was shot around 5:30 p.m. November 2, according to the Covina Police Department.

Villa was found around 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Investigators identified Juan Nava, 66, as a suspect. A search warrant was served at his home November 3 and he was arrested, according to the Covina Police Department.

The shooting allegedly stemmed from Nava’s claims of property being burglarized from his storage unit, a claim he also made in December 2023. Nava allegedly grew angry that Villa apparently did not believe him, according to the Covina Police Department.

Police seized assault weapons and ammunition from Nava’s home.

Nava was officially charged with one count of murder, three counts of possessing an assault weapon, and special allegations of personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records.

Nava is being held without bail at the north County Correctional Facility in Castaic.

Nava’s initial appearance in Pomona Superior Court was November 5 and will be continued to December 9, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records.

COVINA - Police detectives are determining what led to the shooting death of a woman whose body was found at a storage facility Sunday afternoon.

Police were called to One Stop Storage, 1432 N. Barranca Ave., around 5:45 p.m. The woman was found inside the facility and declared dead., according to the Covina Police Department.

It is not publicly clear if she was found inside a storage unit, or elsewhere on the property.

Police have yet to reveal if a suspect is being sought.

The woman has yet to be publicly identified.

COVINA - An alleged DUI driver and his passenger were arrested September 3, allegedly attempting to escape the long arm of the law.

Covina officers attempted a traffic stop on the driver of a 2019 Honda Accord near Arrow Highway and Bonnie Cove Avenue for traffic violations, according to Sgt. Gonzalez of the Covina Police Department.

The driver entered an apartment complex to ditch the fuzz. Then the pursuit initiated.

The driver fled at 20 miles per hour above the posted speed limit and used evasive maneuvers to evade arrest, Gonzalez told SGV CityWatch.

The pursuit ended with a suspect search in two neighborhoods near Superior Grocers at the dead ends of West Bygrove Street and West Gragmont Street.

Gabriel Espinoza, 38, was booked on suspicion of evading a peace officer, driving under the influence and delaying a peace officer. He was issued a citation and released, according to Los Angeles County booking records.

Also arrested was Melissa Calderon, 38, booked on suspicion of delaying an officer and public intoxication. She was also issued a citation and released, according to county booking records.
