IRWINDALE - A woman walking in traffic lanes was struck and killed by a vehicle Sunday.

The crash occurred around 5:50 a.m. May 17 on southbound 605 freeway north of Rivergrade Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, dispatch received calls of a female with long hair and black shorts walking near the center divider. She was also seen walking in the middle lanes, waving her hands as if attempting to get the attention of motorists, according to the CHP.

At 5:58 a.m., the CHP reported the pedestrian was down near the right shoulder. A vehicle was stopped near the divider. At 6:06 a.m., the CHP requested Caltrans for a hard closure of all lanes.

It is not entirely clear if the woman was driving prior to walking in traffic lanes. CHP officers noted an unknown vehicle was parked on the right shoulder near the crash scene.

By 6:36 a.m., a Sig Alert was issued for the No. 2, 3, and 4 lanes. It is unclear if all lanes have been reopened as of 9:17 a.m.

IRWINDALE - A man estimated to be in his 80s died September 23, found after a two-vehicle collision.

First responders were sent to lower Azusa Road near the 605 freeway around 7:13 a.m. Tuesday and found a red Lexus and Toyota Tacoma collided with each other. One vehicle sideswiped the other, according to Sgt. Lopez of the Irwindale Police Department.

The driver in his 80s was eastbound with colliding with a westbound vehicle, Lopez told SGV CityWatch.

The other driver involved in the crash was not seriously injured.

The roadway was closed until around 11 a.m.

POMONA - Homicide detectives announced the September 10 arrest of the suspect implicated in the fatal car-to-car shooting of a woman at an Irwindale intersection.

Basilio Perez Valencia was identified a day after the fatal shooting. Irwindale and West Covina Police officers located Perez, performed a traffic stop and arrested him, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

Perez, an Azusa resident, was officially charged September 12 with one count each of murder, attempted murder, unlawful firearm activity and enhancements, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records.

Aryanna Rose Avila, 23, was identified by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Avila suffered a wound to the upper body. She was found in the passenger seat of a white sedan adjacent from Gladstone Middle School at Enid Avenue and Arrow Highway. She was hospitalized where she later died.

A gofundme has been established to help with funeral costs.

Irwindale Police officers were told of a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting at Irwindale Avenue and Arrow Highway around 1:35 a.m. September 9.

After Perez was identified as a suspect, a flyer was sent to surrounding police agencies. Perez was arrested shortly after.

It is not publicly clear if investigators determined a motive for the shooting.

Perez is being held without bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in Pomona Superior Court September 29.

IRWINDALE - One crime scene was broken down, a second remains active after a fatal shooting Tuesday.

The shooting reportedly occurred in the Intersection of Arrow Highway and Irwindale Avenue. The victim was transported to a hospital and died, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

Los Angeles County firefighters were sent to North Enid Avenue south of Arrow Highway near Gladstone Middle School at 1:38 a.m. Homicide detectives and Irwindale Police officers focused their investigation on a white sedan stopped along the street.

Children and parents were seemingly unaware of what was happening during morning drop off.

The motive for the shooting was not yet revealed.

LOS ANGELES - Authorities identified the driver killed in a crash while entering the westbound 210 freeway in Irwindale April 11.

Daniel Fisch, a 42-year-old Monrovia man, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. He died from blunt head trauma. The death was ruled accidental. There were no other contributing factors.

The crash involved a black Chevy Impala and a gray Hyundai Elantra.

Witness reports indicate that at least one of the two vehicles involved in this crash was traveling at high speed. One of the vehicles rolled and flipped back onto its wheels, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs.

The crash was reported at 4:41 p.m. on the on ramp to the 210 westbound from northbound Irwindale Avenue. Authorities had the on-ramp closed down for up to five hours before the scene was finally cleared.

UPDATE, 12:42 p.m.: The rupture has been secured and further repairs are taking place. Evacuations have been lifted, according to the Irwindale Police Department

IRWINDALE - Homes and businesses have been evacuated near a construction site Tuesday morning.

Construction work being done at the city library, 16053 Calle de Paseo, led to a gas line rupture, according to the Irwindale Police Department.

“City facilities & homes on the 16000 blk of Calle de Paseo evacuated as a precaution,” according to the Irwindale Police Department in a written statement.

​All homes within a 300-foot radius near the rupture have been asked to evacuate, according to the City of Irwindale.

The rupture occurred around 11:09 a.m.

Los Angeles County Firefighters and gas company workers are on scene.

IRWINDALE - Azusa, Baldwin Park, Duarte and Irwindale announced their opposition to a plan by the EPA to dump debris left by the Eaton Fire in an open field near the San Gabriel River and are working to shut down the operation.

The Environmental Protection Agency has already prepped and set up operations at the Lario Staging Area, 15701 E. Foothill Blvd. The above-mentioned cities alleged they did not receive advanced notification about the debris processing site, nor were the cities given the opportunity to register concerns about potential soil, water and air contamination.

The site is slated to open early this week for the collection and processing of hazardous household debris, including lithium electric vehicle batteries.

“While the Cities are completely in solidarity with our neighboring communities, we are extremely disappointed with the lack of respect to our local residents for not being notified of the EPA’s clean up efforts and having toxic materials transported to our backyards,” according to the City of Duarte in a written statement, adding “the Cities will work to formally oppose this site, as well as mobilize efforts to shut down the site as soon as possible.”

Eric Nold, on-scene coordinator with the EPA, is working at the Lario processing site and said “We don’t want to do any of this type of activity out there in the middle of the community.”

Debris is slated to be brought in daily via backroads to avoid the freeways.

The Lario Staging Area is adjacent to the San Gabriel River Bikepath, frequented by bicyclists. To the north are the San Gabriel Canyon spreading grounds and Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area to the south.

The EPA has outlined measures to minimize the impact of the debris to be processed at the site, including spill control measures, continuous perimeter, air monitoring, water trucks to reduce visible, dust emissions and plastic lining to be applied to all material processing areas.

Debris will be sorted into appropriate waste streams and packaged for proper shipment and disposal.

Duarte officials are working with Senator Rubio’s Office to host a town hall in Duarte and allow residents to voice their concerns. More information about this forum is underway, according to Duarte officials.

In the meantime, residents concerned about the processing site are urged to express concerns by calling the USEPA at 1-833-798-7372.

IRWINDALE - Police jailed another arson suspect, the second to reportedly ignite a fire in less than a week.

The suspect, Maninder Singh, a 33-year-old Baldwin Park resident, allegedly ignited a fire in a flood control channel that runs under Arrow Highway just east of the 605 freeway January 17. First responders were sent to the fire around 7 a.m., according to the Irwindale Police Department.

Los Angeles County Firefighters doused the blaze.

Singh was booked on suspicion of arson and possession of drug paraphernalia. Los Angeles County Fire Department Arson Investigators later joined the investigation, according to the Irwindale Police Department.

“This marks the second arson-related arrest in Irwindale this week. With ongoing fires and a state of emergency in Los Angeles County, we urge all residents to avoid using flammable materials in riverbeds and surrounding areas to ensure the safety of our community,” according to the Irwindale Police Department in a written statement.

IRWINDALE - A Toyota Corolla crashed, killing the front passenger and injuring the driver early Monday morning.

The crash occurred in southbound lanes of Irwindale Avenue just north of Ornelas Street just before 12:30 a.m. January 13. The Corolla struck the western curb and rolled over in front of a business in the 5400 block of Irwindale Avenue, according to the Irwindale Police Department.

Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics declared the passenger dead at the scene. The driver was taken to a hospital.

The driver and passenger were the only people inside the crashed car. No other vehicles were involved.

It is unclear what caused the driver to crash.

IRWINDALE - A Baldwin Park man is accused of lighting multiple fires near the 605 freeway Sunday afternoon.

The suspect, 29-year-old Ruben Montes, was witnessed by firefighters as he was lighting flames along Rivergrade Road and the 605 Freeway January 12. Firefighters were originally called to the area around 12:30 p.m., according to the Irwindale Police Department.

It is unclear if the fires Montes allegedly lit caused any damage.
