Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK – Alcohol likely contributed to a rollover crash on a rain-soaked Mt. Baldy Road above Claremont Monday night that took the life of his passenger, the California Highway Patrol said.
Oscar Daniel Pineda, 30, is accused of driving south on the mountain road north of Shinn Road at high speed, causing the 2018 Toyota Camry to crash into a dirt berm and overturn onto the asphalt, according to the CHP. The collision occurred January 17 at 11:35 p.m. Pineda’s right rear passenger, a 28-year-old Ontario woman, died at the scene. She has been identified as Janet Hernandez, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Pineda and his other passenger, Brian Martin Valdivia from Los Angeles, were taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Neither Hernandez, nor Valdivia were wearing seatbelts, according to the CHP. Pineda was booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing bodily injury, according to the CHP. Pineda is being held in lieu of $100,000 ahead of a scheduled appearance in Pomona Municipal Court January 20. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CLAREMONT - A man was found hiding under a parked car after slamming head-on into a tree Monday morning, Claremont Police said. The crash occurred just before 11:30 a.m. in the 3700 block of North Padua Avenue, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatch reports. The driver of a Dodge Charger slammed into a tree and fled the crash on foot. He was caught hiding under a car during a yard-to-yard search, according to the Claremont Police Department.
Sgt. David DeMetz identified the suspect as 23-year-old Vicente Peralta of Montclair. He was booked on suspicion of felony DUI and felony hit and run. Peralta is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. Court date information was unavailable. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CLAREMONT – Police announced Friday the arrest of a 67-year-old Covina woman who they allege struck and killed a pedestrian January 8, leaving his body in the roadway. Evidence at the scene led officers to Helen Scheuplein and her vehicle in Pomona at the Hi-Brow bar in the 500 block of West Foothill Boulevard. She was arrested without incident and booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, vehicular manslaughter and hit and run causing death, according to the Claremont Police Department. Scheuplein is accused of killing 50-year-old Rancho Cucamonga man James Radzik in the 1600 block of North Towne Avenue. During Scheuplein’s arrest, officers seized evidence related to the hit and run crash, Claremont Police said.
Scheuplein is being held in lieu of 100,000 ahead of a scheduled appearance in Pomona Superior Court Monday, January 13. |
