Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - Police announced the arrest of a man accused of pulling the trigger in a fatal shootout May 31. Mario Magana, 25, a known Primera Flats gang member, was nabbed at the Friendly Hills Inn, 2146 San Gabriel Blvd., in Rosemead June 9. He was booked on suspicion of murder, according to Covina Police Sgt. Rodriguez in a written statement. Magana was tracked to the Rosemead motel where three other people were staying in the suspect’s room. The other three were arrested on unrelated charges, Rodriguez said. Magana is scheduled for a court appearance Thursday, June 11. The man killed in the shooting, Daniel Cisneros, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. He died from a gunshot wound to the back. His death was ruled a homicide, according to a coroner report. Cisneros’ brother Rick Ortega, 26, was arrested May 31 — the day of the shooting. Police did not state specifically Ortega’s roll in the shooting death.
Officers arriving to a report of a man firing a handgun and call of a man down found Cisneros critically wounded in the 1100 block of Wanamaker Drive by Nearglen Avenue, according to Lt. Ryan Davis of the Covina Police Department. An argument possibly led to the shooting. Davis did not know in a prior interview what led to the argument, but said there was evidence that multiple people were firing at each other. Cisneros died at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Police were called to the scene at 12:22 p.m. Cisneros was found on a breezeway between two apartment buildings, according to Sgt. Keith Sutherland of the Covina Police Department. A handgun was recovered at the scene. At least four people were involved in the incident, Sutherland told SGV CityWatch. Two homes were struck by gunfire. There was no evidence of additional injuries. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Covina Police Detective Gonzales at 626-384-5622, or email [email protected]. |
