Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor GLENDORA - A man was finally detained after refusing to surrender to officers for roughly an hour after he allegedly brandished what was thought to be a rifle in the Walmart shopping center parking lot Wednesday afternoon.
Officers arriving to investigate the report of a weapon brandishing saw the suspect attempting to drive away from Walmart, but his RV stalled on Auto Center Drive in eastbound lanes, according to Sgt. Mike Henderson of the Glendora Police Department. Officers were called to Walmart, 1950 Auto Centre Dr., around 5:30 p.m. “Officers surrounded the vehicle and made contact verbally with the driver. He ultimately surrendered and was found to be needing a mental health evaluation,” Henderson told SGV CityWatch. The weapon seen being brandished turned out to be a pellet gun, Henderson told SGV CityWatch. The man surrendered willingly to officers. He was taken away by ambulance for a mental evaluation. Officers summoned a heavy duty tow truck to pull the stalled RV back into the Walmart parking lot after it was briefly inspected inside and out. Two Chihuahuas seen roaming inside of the RV were taken away by the Inland Valley Humane Society. Dylan Harmer was fatally shot by Azusa officers called to assist with a containment and search for the suspect after he allegedly attempted to carjack multiple drivers and allegedly aimed a handgun at police August 4. Glendora officers were called to a domestic violence report after a woman claimed her boyfriend assaulted her and that he was armed with a handgun. The suspect, later identified by the coroner as Harmer, fled the home as police arrived and he allegedly pointed the gun at them, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Glendora officers requested mutual aid from Azusa Police as a containment was set up. Arriving Azusa officers encountered Harmer as he attempted to carjack multiple drivers in the intersection of Glendora Avenue and Route 66. “The suspect turned and pointed a handgun at the officers, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred,” according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Harmer was struck in the upper torso. No one else was injured. Harmer was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center where he died, according to Sarah Ardalani, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. A coroner exam is scheduled for Harmer. The suspect was struck in the upper torso and died after being hospitalized. No one else was injured. Few details are available right now, but the shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. August 4. One person was struck by gunfire, according to Sgt. Henderson of the Glendora Police Department. The person struck by gunfire was taken to an area hospital where he died, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
