During the pursuit, a passenger tossed a handgun from the vehicle on the westbound 210 freeway just before the 605 freeway interchange. Officers ultimately recovered the gun, as well as narcotics and instruments described as burglary tools, according to the Glendora Police Department. The department’s Community Impact Team and detectives were conducting enforcement patrols in areas saturated by community complaints of drug sales occurring. A traffic stop was attempted on a vehicle whose driver reportedly committed several vehicle code violations, but the driver refused to stop, according to the Glendora Police Department. The driver and passenger were taken into custody. Arrested were Julia Victoria Barbosa, 24, and Joseph Jesse Marquez, 21. Barbosa was booked on suspicion of evading an officer with wonton disregard for public safety, identity theft, possessing a controlled substance, possessing burglary tools and a probation violation, according to Glendora Police arrest records. Marquez was booked on suspicion of possessing counterfeit items, possessing a controlled substance, possessing a controlled substance while armed and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, according to Glendora Police arrest records. Marquez posted $50,000 bail and was released February 19. Barbosa is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail. She has pending future court date from a previous crime. Juan Antonio Armenta, 45, was spotted in the 1000 block of East Route 66 September 7. He was followed as he drove into a nearby neighborhood where he shut off his headlights. A vehicle search during a traffic stop revealed a treasure trove of items. “The vehicle was searched and five cut catalytic converters, an angle grinder and drug paraphernalia were located,” according to the Glendora Police Department in a written statement. Armenta was booked on suspicion of grand theft, possession of burglary tools, possession of drug paraphernalia and for an outstanding arrest warrant. He is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina Courthouse Friday, September 9, according to Los Angeles County booking records. David Rivas, 34, allegedly fled from officers when they tried to stop him March 11. Rivas ran briefly from officers who eventually chased him down and arrested him. A handgun was located, according to the Glendora Police Department. Rivas was arrested just after midnight at Gladstone Street and Citrus Avenue. “A handgun was also located near where Rivas was arrested, and it was determined Rivas tried to discard it,” according to the Glendora Police Department in a written statement. Rivas was booked on suspicion of the unlawful taking of a vehicle, receiving known stolen property, evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety, hit and run, resisting a peace officer, being a felon/addict in possession of a firearm, being a prohibited person in possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm in public, possessing a controlled substance, possessing a controlled substance while armed with a loaded firearm, being a gang member while carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, altering/forging/falsifying registration and for a felony warrant. Rivas is being held in Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina courthouse March 15. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor GLENDORA - About 400 marijuana plants were removed from a home that caught fire in the northern end of Glendora Thursday afternoon, a police sergeant said.
No one was found inside the home after firefighters arrived to extinguish the flames in the 600 block of West La Crosse Street. Firefighters reported flames from one side of the home believed to be caused by an electrical issue, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire was reported before 2:50 p.m. September 2. All the plants were seized and removed from the single-story home that afternoon, Layaye told SGV CityWatch. The house was set up with ventilation and irrigation systems. It was not immediately clear how long the operation was running before being discovered. No arrests were made at the time the interview was conducted Friday afternoon. Detectives were in the process of contacting the home owner, Layaye told SGV CityWatch. Nicholas Hector Gomez fled an officer who attempted to stop him at Route 66 and Glendora Avenue around 4 p.m. He fled east towards Glenwood Avenue and turned north right to where construction crews severed the road for the L Line train, according to Lt. James DeMond of the Glendora Police Department. Before turning onto Glenwood, Gomez is accused of driving on the wrong side of the road. “He turned around, then he let the car roll and it and he got out and ran. The car struck a couple of parked cars,” DeMond told SGV CityWatch. Gomez, 34, was apprehended quickly after fleeing his ride. Gomez was booked on suspicion of evading a peace officer with wonton disregard for safety, hit & run vehicle property damage, possession of unlawful paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, receiving known stolen property and for an outside felony warrant. He is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail, according to Glendora Police booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor GLENDORA – Methamphetamine and tools commonly used in vehicle burglaries were discovered after a bicyclist was stopped March 3, police said. Christopher Rangel, 36, was stopped on a bicycle near Grand Avenue and Route 66 at 1 a.m. Wednesday after allegedly committing a traffic violation. During the investigation, the officer discovered methamphetamine, a vehicle wedge pump, several lock picks and numerous vehicle keys, according to the Azusa Police Department. “An air wedge like the one photographed is commonly used by car burglars to pry open vehicle doors,’ according to the Glendora Police Department in a written statement. Rangel was arrested and booked on suspicion of being in possession of burglary tools and narcotics. Rangel was issued a citation and released. Los Angeles County booking information did not specify a future court date. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor GLENDORA - A biohazard of immeasurable proportions was hauled away from the hillside of South Hills Park earlier in May. 23 Transient camps filled South Hills Park -- camps that were mostly dismantled and hauled away May 7 through May 9. The camps presented unhealthy and unsafe living conditions: make-shift restrooms, toilet areas, human waste, vermin infestation, homemade fire pits, barbed wire “fencing” and damage to city water property, the Glendora Police Department said. Authorities visited the transient camps over the last two weeks and offered aid and temporary housing. Authorities made their intentions known May 5 that human waste, garbage and other biohazards would be thrown away, Glendora Police said. The cleanup effort was in response to community complaints received over the last several months, Glendora Police said. “Five, 40-foot rollaway trash bins were filled during this cleanup, nine people were issued citations for Glendora Municipal Code and Health Order Violations and one person was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance,” Glendora Police said.
About 20 transients accepted two-day motel vouchers. 13 referrals to Union Station Homeless Services were made for follow up, Glendora Police said. Bulk property that could not be carried away was stored for pickup at a later date. “The City of Glendora and its residents care deeply about our homeless plight and was one of the first cities to conduct a survey of its residents and the answers that were received were evenly mixed,” according to Glendora Mayor Michael Allawos. “The City Government and staff have been implementing a balanced approach for addressing this decades old travesty. Our outstanding Glendora Police Department is working with incredibly difficult circumstances and is able to find that balance in their everyday work,” Allawos said. Two officers worked more than 10 hours September 28 throughout the city, ultimately issuing two citations and arresting five people. One man, a convicted felon, was arrested and found with methamphetamine and a concealed sawed-off shotgun, Glendora Police said. The convicted felon, Bernie Fonseca of El Monte, was on a bicycle when stopped by police near Mauna Loa Avenue and Glendora Avenue around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Lt. Marty Barrett of the Glendora Police Department. Fonseca was booked on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, being in possession of a controlled substance while armed, being a felon in possession of prohibited ammunition, possession of a controlled substance for sale and he also had an outstanding $50,000 narcotics warrant, Barrett said. The work was part of an effort by the Community Impact Team.
“...Their task at hand was to be visible in the community and business areas, walk foot beat at least 2 hours of their shift,” according to Glendora Police Chief Lisa Rosales in a social media post. “They conducted over 200 minutes of foot patrols, introduced themselves at 17 different businesses, made enforcement stops, and handled homeless issues citywide,” Rosales said. Fonseca is being held in lieu of $100,000 in the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County booking records. |
