The checkpoint, held in an undisclosed location, is being deployed in partnership with the California Office of Traffic Safety and Nation Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Driver Sober, or Get Pulled Over campaign. During the 18-day deployment, law enforcement agencies will conduct checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols throughout the Christmas and New Years holidays. Checkpoint funding is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Halloween night sees a slight increase in DUI-related collisions. From 2012 to 2016, authorities reported 168 drunk driving deaths and 44 percent of all people killed in crashes on Halloween night involved a drunk driver, according to the National Highway Safety Administration. Drivers age 21 to 34 pose a greater risk, accounting for almost half of all DUI deaths on Halloween in 2016, the NHTSA said. Glendora Police suggest drivers should avoid residential areas where trick-or-treaters are likely to be and to obey stop signs and traffic signals. Costumed trick-or-treaters may be difficult to see at night and drivers may have difficulty seeing them when they walk across the street. Authorities strongly recommend either arraigning rideshare transportation or a designated driver if you plan on drinking. Parents should plan a trick-or-treating route ahead of time, plan for more visible costumes that can be seen at night and to carry a flashlight. The checkpoint, held as part of a nationwide Dive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign, is aimed at getting impaired drivers off the road while educating them on the dangers of driving under the influence, according to the Glendora Police Department. “Keeping our roads safe for those who live and work in the City of Glendora is a priority we take seriously,” said Glendora Police Chief Lisa Rosales. Funding for the checkpoint is provided to the Glendora Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. DUI Saturation patrols will take place in areas that experience a high volume of DUI collisions and arrests, Glendora Police announced. High-visibility DUI checkpoints and patrols have shown to reduce the number of DUI injury crashes and deaths. Such collisions can be reduced up to 20 percent when DUI patrols and checkpoints are highly-publicized, Glendora Police said. “We want everyone to enjoy the holiday, so please be responsible and plan ahead to ensure a safe celebration,” said Glendora Police Chief Lisa G. Rosales.
