​Community Tip Leads To Arrest in Irwindale Attack

IRWINDALE - A South El Monte man was arrested August 11 after police tracked him down courtesy of information from the community.

Jesus Avila Jr., 33, was arrested after officers served a search warrant at an undisclosed location in Irwindale at 5:30 p.m. Avila was booked on suspicion of attempted homicide, according to the Irwindale Police Department in a written statement.

Avila is being held in lieu of a little more than $2 million bail in the West Covina jail.

After police publicized security footage and still images of the suspect and barbaric attack from July 12, information was received through the LA Regional Crime Stoppers website that helped detectives learn the suspect’s identity, Irwindale Police said.

The attack occurred at an Arco gas station, 110 E. Longden Ave., around 2:11 a.m.

The suspect, whom police say is Avila, arrived in a vehicle and approached the victim. The suspect blindsided his 61-year-old victim with a punch that knocked him to the ground, causing his head to hit the pavement after getting into an unknown confrontation.

The attack was seemingly unproven, Irwindale Police said.

“As a result of his injuries, the victim suffered substantial memory loss and has been unable to make a statement to investigators,” Irwindale Police said.

Court date information was not readily available.
