The child, Kevin Lopez, and his parents will meet and thank deputies Erik Nava and Jose Cruz for their actions March 12. The boy was initially saved by a neighbor who saw the boy trapped in the gate in La Puente Monday. The neighbor called 9-1-1 and said the boy was purple and was unsure if the child was dead. Deputies Nava and Cruz arrived and performed CPR for four minutes until paramedics arrived. Deputies helped clear and block roads, giving paramedics a clear path to a nearby hospital where the boy was treated, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. “Fire paramedic personnel and the treating physician credited Deputy Nava and Deputy Cruz’s actions as instrumental in saving the life of the unresponsive patient,” the Sheriff’s Department said. Deputy Nava already saved the life of another child once. On November 16, 2015, Nava saved a 7-month-old child who also stopped breathing.
