Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LA VERNE – Police and school officials believe there is no immediate threat to Bonita High School after a student made a threat over social media Wednesday. La Verne Police officers were notified of the threat after school hours January 23. The school resource officer initiated an investigation, which included contacting the student who issued the threats, according to the La Verne Police Department. The student’s home was searched. Police later determined that the student did not have the means to commit violence against the school, La Verne Police said.
“Based upon this collaborative effort with Bonita High School, as well as the cooperation with the responsible individual’s parents, La Verne Police Department no longer feels that a threat exists to the students or staff at Bonita High School,” La Verne Police said in a written statement. The man, later identified as Washington, fled officers and a chase began, La Verne Police said.
Washington came to an abrupt stop, after driving through red lights and stop signs, at Puddingstone Drive near Brackett Field Airport. The suspect exited his vehicle and immediately began fighting with officers, La Verne Police said. “While attempting to detain the suspect, one of our Officers sustained a serious injury,” La Verne Police said. The injured officer was hospitalized at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. While being booked in the La Verne jail, Washington assaulted the jail staff, La Verne Police said. “Washington, who was unharmed during this incident, is on active PRCS and on probation for 69 PC (Resisting an Executive Officer),” La Verne Police said. Washington was booked on suspicion of vehicle theft, attempted robbery, criminal threats, vandalism, felony evading, resisting and battery on a custodial officer. Washington has already made an appearance in Pomona Superior Court. One of the suspects, Demarcus Johnson, was jailed after police arrived to the scene December 26 and a set a containment search. Two remaining suspects, Angel Baltazar and Angel Sandoval, escaped capture that day, but were located through detective work, La Verne Police said. Police responding to two burglary calls found rear glass sliding doors smashed and jewelry taken, La Verne Police said in a written statement. Police responded to a third home when the homeowner interrupted the crime in progress and called 9-1-1. Johnson was found during a search and arrested. Unsuccessful attempts were made to speak with a La Verne Police supervisor to learn the times and locations for each burglary. “La Verne Detectives immediately set about identifying and locating them,” La Verne Police said. “Through witness testimony and external surveillance video, Detectives were quickly able to identify the suspects, who were also believed to be Rialto residents.” With the help of the Rialto Police Department, search warrants were served at the homes of Baltazar and Sandoval December 29. Both men were arrested and evidence taken in the burglary was seized, La Verne Police said. The shooting was reported around 6:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of First Street. Witnesses saw the two men open fire, then flee into a grey or green vehicle, according to the La Verne Police Department. Police interviewed the intended victims in the home, but they refused to answer questions, La Verne Police said. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call the La Verne Police Detective Bureau Supervisor at 909-596-1913.
