Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LA VERNE - Police are still searching for a suspect who brandished a handgun at her Lyft driver during an argument after he dropped the woman off near her location, La Verne Police said. The suspect was picked up with an acquaintance at Bravo Burger, 1215 N. White Ave., in Pomona Tuesday afternoon. The suspect and acquaintance were dropped off in the 1300 block of Palomares Avenue in La Verne near where the driver was instructed instead of the exact address, setting off an argument, according to Sgt. Cory Leeper of the La Verne Police Department. “When she got out of the car, she slammed the car, which the Lyft driver became upset about. One of the suspect’s brandished a firearm and pointed at the victim,” Leeper said.
The Lyft driver fled the area. Both suspects were only identified as two Black women in their early 20s, Leeper said. La Verne Police were called to the scene about 15 to 20 minutes later after the driver called Lyft and filled his vehicle with gas, Leeper said. Police have an idea of who the suspect is, Leeper said. Jesus Perez was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. He died of multiple blunt-force trauma. His death was ruled accidental. La Verne Police received the call of the collision at 1:02 p.m. March 2. The body was discovered several hundred feet west of the crossing at San Dimas Canyon Road. Eastbound train 362 was headed to Downtown San Bernardino when it struck Perez. No one else was injured. Multiple trains were cancelled during the investigation, with one train being delayed by one hour and 45 minutes. Bus bridges assisted some delayed riders, according to Metrolink.

Metrolink train 362 headed for downtown San Bernardino struck the pedestrian near San Dimas Canyon Road south of Arrow Highway around 1 p.m. La Verne Police received a call of the collision at 1:02 p.m., according to Cpl. Erin Hess of the La Verne Police Department. A representative with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner arrived on scene around 3 p.m.
With the coroner on scene, the train will soon be moving to its destination, Hess said. The body rests several hundred feet west of San Dimas Canyon Road. Near the body, a small memorial consisting of a blue balloon, an orange balloon and a white cross is erected. The memorial is from a previous train versus pedestrian death, Hess said. Whether Saturday’s death and the memorial are connected is unknown. No other injuries have been reported. The student who received the threats went to the La Verne Police Department February 28. In a screenshot shared by CBS2 reporter Cristy Fajardo, the threat targets Latinos, African Americans and stated “WE KNOW WHERE THEY LIVE AND WHAT CARS THEY DRIVE.” The contents of the smoking backpack have yet to be disclosed. A student’s vehicle was set ablaze in a dormitory parking lot Friday morning, according to the La Verne Police Department -- this just on day after a student reported a social media threat. Remaining classes were cancelled at Noon Friday, campus administrators said. Arson investigators from the Los Angeles County Fire Department are assisting with the vehicle fire investigation. “Over the past two days, the University of La Verne has received two reports of heinous acts targeted at members of our student body,” campus administrators said in a statement on the University of La Verne website. “These actions are despicable and are an affront to our values as a university. This is a critical moment for us to declare that we will not tolerate this type of behavior.” |
