This is the second deadly crash to occur near the airport in as many days. The pilot died at the scene, according to Sgt. Justin Newman of the La Verne Police Department. A Beech Bonanza aircraft may have clipped a tree, according to Elizabeth Cory of the Federal Aviation Administration. Los Angeles County Firefighters were called to provide assistance to La Verne firefighters at 11:54 a.m., four minutes after La Verne Police received call of the crash. Aerial footage from KTLA 5 showed a blue tarp draped over the cockpit of the plane. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash. The crash was reported just before Noon. The crash caused a small fire which was extinguished by La Verne Firefighters, who were assisted by Los Angeles County Firefighters. There has been no official word on the extent of injuries, but according to footage broadcast by KTLA 5 news, a blue tarp was placed over the cockpit of the crashed plane. The pilot of the plane died at the scene, according to the La Verne Police Department in a written statement. The plane was piloted by an unidentified man. The passenger is a female, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The crash occurred around 5:47 p.m. near 1600 Puddingstone Dr. The pilot was reportedly practicing landing approaches when the single-engine Cessna 177RG crashed into a nearby nursery, according to Ian Gregor spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. According to an FAA registry, the 177RG fixed-wing, single-engine Cessna that crashed was manufactured in 1977. The owner is a man with a Los Angeles address. Los Angeles County firefighters report a “well-seated fire” inside a hangar at the field. La Verne firefighters are current dousing “Class A materials” and state the hangar has pack-rat conditions, according to La Verne Fire Department radio traffic. Class A materials consist of trash, plastics, paper, wood and fabric. La Verne public works is being summoned for a forklift to assist. |
