All occupants fled the home in the 1800 block of Baseline Road. Firefighters were sent to the scene at 5:34 p.m., according to the La Verne Fire Department. The fire burned in an attached garage and spread to the attic. Firefighters from both La Verne and from the Los Angeles County Fire Department were able to knock down the fire before it reached the home, according to the La Verne Fire Department. An officer attempted to stop a suspicious driver in the area of Baseline Road and Esperanza Driver. The driver fled to the 210 freeway and reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, forcing the officer to cancel the chase, according to the La Verne Police Department. The suspect was last seen exiting at San Dimas Avenue where a backpack was found and recovered, according to the La Verne Police Department. “Officers retrieved the property which turned out to be property stolen during a home burglary in Corona just prior to their visit to La Verne. The property was returned to the victim, who advised a firearm was also stolen,” according to the La Verne Police Department in a written statement. Officers returned to where the backpack was found and located the loaded gun. Detectives described the crime as a distraction burglary: the woman reportedly took the wallet while the man distracted her inside Vons, 1600 Foothill Blvd., October 1 around 10:36 a.m., according to the La Verne Police Department. “The suspects entered and exited the store in under two minutes. The suspects used the victim’s stolen credit cards to make multiple purchases at Best Buy, Ulta, GameStop, and Kohls in the City of Glendora,” according to the La Verne Police Department in a written statement. The first suspect is a Latino woman who stands 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 350 pounds. She has black hair, brown eyes and is 30 to 40 years old. The second suspect is a white man who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 170 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes and is 20 to 25 years old. A man with a $2 million warrant for murder in San Bernardino County was arrested November 7 after La Verne Police caught him escaping a Vons supermarket with a basket loaded with 20 Tide laundry detergent bottles. The theft occurred at Vons, 1600 Foothill Blvd. around 11:30 p.m. The suspect was being followed out by the store manager when Cpl. McKinley pulled up during a patrol of the area, according to the La Verne Police Department. The store manager did not desire prosecution, according to La Verne Police Community Service Officer Holly Savage. “Corporal McKinley made contact with the individual, who was found to have a $2 million warrant for murder out of San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office. He was held until SBSO detectives arrived to take him into custody," according to the La Verne Police Department in a written statement. The suspect's name has not been released. Firefighters were sent to the 5500 block of Finch Street October 7 just before 2:30 a.m. Dramatic images from the La Verne fire department showed flames shooting out from the roof. With help of Los Angeles County firefighters, the damage was held to just the garage and the attic. The home itself was not damaged, according to the La Verne fired appointment. The fire burned at the storage business, 1640 N. White Ave., just before 5 a.m. September 4. The fire was extinguished with assistance from Los Angeles County firefighters, West Covina fire fighters and Montclair firefighters. The injured fire fighter has since been released from the hospital, according to the La Verne Fire Department. The La Verne Police Department and fire department are working to determine the cause. William Elftman Jr., 48, was behind the wheel of a 2011 Hyundai Sonata eastbound on Baseline Road west of Saint Mark Avenue at high speed. As Baseline curved to the right, Elftman continued straight, eventually striking a curb, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Sonata further struck a retaining wall and rolled over, coming to a rest in the rear yard of a home. The Sonata caught on fire. Residents used a garden hose to stop the fire’s spread, according to the California Highway Patrol. “Prior to this crash, La Verne Police Department received at least two 9-1-1 phone calls of witnesses reporting the Hyundai's driver as driving erratically and at a high rate of speed within the city of La Verne. In addition, a witness even flagged down a La Verne Police Department officer to report the reckless driver,” according to the California Highway Patrol in a written statement. Alcohol and drugs are not considered to be factors at this time, according to the California Highway Patrol. Firefighters were dispatched to the 4300 block of Saint Mark Avenue around 9:19 a.m. May 31. The vehicle burst into flames after the crash. The two dead inside the vehicle will require extrication from the twisted wreck. Initially, it appears that the vehicle was eastbound on Baseline Road, hopped the curb, tore a path across a residential front yard, crashed through a cinderblock wall and wrought iron fence until it finally smashed into the rear yard on Saint Mark. Eastbound baseline Road is closed from Fruit Avenue by La Verne Police. The California Highway patrol is investigating. Investigators learned that the girl’s parents who still reside in Guatemala demanded their daughter Heidy Julissa Cac Choc return to their home country or they would have someone return her, according to the La Verne Police Department. Heidy was reported missing at 5:23 p.m. April 11 by her foster mother. She was last seen leaving her Bonita High School class at 2:40 p.m. It is either unknown, or has not been publicly shared why Heidy’s parents demanded her return to Guatemala. A passerby flagged down a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau March 10. The passerby reportedly heard the sounds of a woman screaming near the 6300 block of Stephens Ranch Road, according to Lt. Elisabeth Sachs of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. San Dimas deputies responded around 8 p.m. to the area and reported hearing three to four rounds of gunfire and believed they were the targets, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s radio traffic. While deputies took refuge behind their patrol vehicle, backup and a helicopter arrived to safely evacuate deputies from the extremely dark location. Claremont Police and La Verne Police assisted with a perimeter while deputies conducted an extensive search, Sachs told SGV CityWatch. |
