The crash was reported to officers at 1:08 p.m. April 4 in the 1900 block of S. Myrtle Ave. Two vehicles were traveling at high speed southbound on Myrtle when an older Mustang crossed into opposing lanes and struck an SUV, according to Lieutenant Daniel Verna of the Monrovia Police Department. “In the 1900 block, the street curves. The driver that was closest to the center of the road apparently wasn’t able to make that turn,” Verna told SGV CityWatch. The racing Ford Mustang slammed into a northbound GMC SUV, The driver of which swerved in an attempt to avoid the Mustang, but they still collided. The Mustang’s driver was ejected and landed in the middle of the road. The front end of the mustang was torn off and the rest of the vehicle slammed into a power pole and burst into flames, Verna told SGV CityWatch. The GMC’s driver suffered major injuries, Verna said. A description of the vehicle that fled the crash was unavailable. Investigators were still trying to determine what color, make and model it is. The Mustang’s driver was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and if he survives, Verna said, he would be facing felony charges, including street racing and reckless driving, both of which caused major injuries.
