Two taco stand employees, two patrons and the suspected DUI driver were hospitalized. Everyone suffered injuries considered not life-threatening, according to the Monrovia Police Department. First responders were called to the 3300 block of Peck Road around 12:15 p.m. Saturday, March 4. The suspected DUI driver crashed into a parked vehicle, which was then sent into the taco stand, according to the Monrovia Police Department. Drivers will be stopped at an undisclosed location and will be evaluated for possible intoxication and for proper licensing. “Over the course of the past three years, there have been 290 DUI investigations with 27 of those resulting in collisions with injuries, harming our citizens and neighbors of Monrovia,” according to the Monrovia Police Department in a written statement. Statewide, alcohol and drug-impaired driving collisions constituted 29 percent of all fatal crashes, the Monrovia Police Department said. Funding for this checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The collision happened near South Primrose Avenue and West Huntington Drive at 7 p.m. December 5 outside Taco Bell, 140 W. Huntington Dr. One vehicle on Primrose attempting to cross Huntington was struck by an eastbound vehicle, according to Lt. Daniel Verna of the Monrovia Police Department. Neither driver was under influence of alcohol, Verna said. There was brief confusion as a Monrovia Police parking officer reported a possible DUI driver who drove around a barrier set up for the Monrovia Holiday Parade just a few blocks from the collision, Verna said. Officers thought the crash and DUI driver were connected since they occurred at virtually the same time, Verna said. The driver was followed, stopped at Magnolia and Huntington Drive and found to be under the influence. She was promptly arrested. Police have not given a time the checkpoint is scheduled to begin, only noting that drivers with be stopped and evaluated for proper licensing and possibly alcohol intoxication.
127 DUI collisions have occurred in Monrovia in the past three years with 32 of those resulting in injuries, Monrovia Police said. Checkpoint funding is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. |
