First responders were sent to the school, 930 East Lemon Ave., around 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, January 31. At least three units are affected by smoke damage. With the fire happening so early in the day, not all students were present at the school. There were no students inside any of the classes affected by the fire, according to Monrovia Fire Chief Jeremy Sanchez. Upon arrival, firefighters reported, smoke and fire showing from the building with active fire, and at least two units. Holes were cut through the roof to ventilate the structure to aid firefighters, Sanchez told SGV CityWatch. School staff and police officers evacuated students to the front of the school where parents at the time of this post are still continuing to pick up their children. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There is no dollar amount yet on the damage caused to the classrooms, Sanchez told SGV CityWatch. The crash occurred at Duarte Road and Fifth Avenue just after 7:30 p.m. September 8. First responders said the vehicle was fully engulfed with flames when they arrived, according to the Monrovia Police Department. First responders extricated burn victims from the vehicle. One of those victims was a child who suffered life-threatening injuries. The child died after being treated at Los Angeles General Medical Center, according to the Monrovia Police Department. It is not publicly clear what may have caused of the crash. The condition of any other surviving victims is not publicly known. The Arcadia Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team assisted with this collision investigation. The fire burned at Ducommun Aerostructures Incorporated, 801 Royal Oaks Dr., an aviation and aerospace components manufacturer, just before 7:30 p.m. Mutual aid was called in from the Arcadia Fire Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department and its hazmat team, as well as hazmat teams from the Glendale and Burbank Fire Departments. “Crews made quick knock down of the fire, and Hazmat teams from Burbank and Glendale Fire Departments responded to isolate and control the hazardous materials,” according to the Monrovia Fire Department in a written statement. There was no threat to the community, according to the Monrovia Fire Department. Two taco stand employees, two patrons and the suspected DUI driver were hospitalized. Everyone suffered injuries considered not life-threatening, according to the Monrovia Police Department. First responders were called to the 3300 block of Peck Road around 12:15 p.m. Saturday, March 4. The suspected DUI driver crashed into a parked vehicle, which was then sent into the taco stand, according to the Monrovia Police Department. Monrovia firefighters and Monrovia police officers were called to the building in the 100 block of Pomona Street around 5 a.m. April 3. When officers arrived to the scene, one officer announced that the baby was delivered, according to Monrovia Police radio traffic. Both the mother, described as being in her 20s, and new baby were transported for treatment to Arcadia Methodist Hospital, according to Cpt. Shawn Morton of the Monrovia Fire Department. There was at least one other person accompanying the woman in the building and was talking with fire department dispatchers, Morton told SGV CityWatch. It was not clear to Lt. Kevin Oberon of the Monrovia Police Department if the mother or the caller were living inside the vacant building. The conditions of the mother and baby were not immediately known. Officers were called to Trader Joe’s, 604 W. Huntington Dr., around 1:18 a.m. February 27 to a report of a woman down on the ground near a vehicle behind the business, according to Lt. Daniel Verna of the Monrovia Police Department. The Monrovia Fire Department also responded. According to a police log, officers on scene reported vomit and feces surrounded the female. The same was found inside the open vehicle, Verna told SGV CityWatch. “There did not appear to be any signs of foul play,” according to the police log. There was no information indicating the age of the female and it is not known how long the female may have been there. Although, in the police log, officers reportedly said the female was there “for a long time,” Verna told SGV CityWatch. The male driver in the truck died after his vehicle overturned and caught fire in the 500 block of North Magnolia Avenue. Officers were dispatched around 6:51 a.m., according to the Monrovia Police Department. “According to witnesses the driver was traveling approximately 100 MPH. The posted speed limit is 25 MPH,” the Monrovia Police Department said in a written statement. A picture posted to a Monrovia Facebook group showed the truck from a distance as it was burning up. The truck was likely northbound on Magnolia Avenue, crashed into a stone fence flipped over onto a resident’s property and then caught fire. It also appeared that trees on the property caught fire. No one else was injured in the crash. The Arcadia Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team responded to help Monrovia investigators. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONROVIA - A motorcyclist reportedly moving at 100 miles per hour while trying to pass another vehicle at an intersection was ejected from his ride after crashing, police said.
The crash occurred just before 9 p.m. at Grand Avenue and East Foothill Boulevard March 16. The other vehicle was being prepping to make a left turn at the intersection from Foothill Boulevard to Grand when the rider attempted to pass on the left broadsided it, according to the Monrovia Police Department. “The motorcycle collided into the driver’s side of the vehicle, which ejected the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was transported to a nearby hospital by Monrovia Paramedics, and is in stable condition,” Monrovia Police said in a written statement. The Arcadia Police Major Accident Investigation Team assisted in the investigation. In an interview with SGV CityWatch, Sgt. Glen Coleman said the rider was questioned after being hospitalized. Neither alcohol, nor drugs are believed to be factors in the crash. Coleman was not sure if the other driver was injured. The woman was pronounced dead by Monrovia firefighters arriving to a medical emergency call in the 1000 block of Wildrose Avenue just after 9 p.m. February 8. In a previous statement, homicide detectives said the victim, only described as a white adult female, suffered from stab wounds and that a second woman was a possible suspect, but no mention of a suspect was made in a subsequent statement. The cause of death will be determined by a coroner examination, homicide detectives said. As Duarte officials advised their residents, Monrovia officials are strongly encouraging residents to gather their essential belongings, pets and prepare for potential evacuations, should a Santa Ana wind event drive the fire south into the foothill neighborhoods. Monrovia city officials said that evacuations, once ordered, will occur in two phases, phase 1 involving all residents north of Hillcrest Boulevard and north of Greystone Avenue to evacuate. Phase 2 evacuations will involve all residents between Hillcrest Boulevard and Greystone Avenue, South to foothill Boulevard, according to Monrovia city officials. Affected residence will be alerted to the emergency alert system, as well as Monrovia police officers and supporting agencies. Monrovia’s community center will be open Tuesday, September 8 at 7 a.m. As an information and cooling center. “Residents should make evacuation plans now, including overnight accommodations. Evacuation sites for those displaced are being prepared,” Monrovia city officials said. “Those with large animals, horses and cattle, should begin to move those animals now. Do not wait until the Evacuation Order to begin moving them out of the area. Accommodations are being made for animals at the Pomona Fairgrounds and Santa Anita Racetrack (limited capacity),” Monrovia city officials said. |
