The shooting occurred just before 5 p.m. in the 300 block of Newmark Avenue. Deputies have yet to explain the reason behind the fatal shooting, But CBS 2 news reported that according to initial information, the man got into an altercation with authorities at a fire station in the 300 block of Newmark Avenue. The shooting occurred just before 6:30 p.m. April 5 in a 500 block of West Garvey Avenue. Monterey Park police officers arrived to the scene and found the man and woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victims died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Witnesses believe that the suspect knew the victims and specifically targeted them. The suspect is described as an Asian man in his late 30s or early 40s, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. Few details are available right now, but investigators do not suspect foul play after the body was discovered near the park, 1902 Fulton Ave., according to Lt. Paul Villalobos of the Monterey Park Police Department. The victim has already been identified as 34-year-old Michael McCartney. He is listed as being transient, according to Public Information Officer Sarah Ardalani of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The cause of death has been deferred pending additional investigation. McCartney’s body was found on a hillside, according to coroner records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK - Police arrested a suspected gunman Saturday night after a shooting left a man suffering a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. The shooting occurred around 5:37 p.m. in the 300 block of South Garfield Avenue September 26. Paramedics treated the man at the scene and transported him to County/USC Medical Center where he underwent surgery, according to the Monterey Park Police Department. Officers found and arrested a suspect with a perimeter set by Alhambra Police, Montebello Police and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies. No additional suspects are at large, Monterey Park Police said.
The victim’s condition was not updated Monday morning. A phone call was placed with the Monterey Park Police watch commander Sunday night, but the call was not returned. The suspect has yet to be publicly identified. The checkpoint will run from 6 p.m. August 24 to 2 a.m. the following day. Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired, according to the Monterey Park Police Department. “The safety of our community is and always will be our mission,” said Monterey Park Police Chief Kelly Gordon. “We are still out there in the middle of a pandemic because driving under the influence is still dangerous and puts a further strain on critical resources.” Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK – A Los Angeles teen was killed after crashing into an oncoming vehicle July 3, police said. The crash occurred around 6:38 p.m. at Crest Vista Drive and Windover Way. The teen, identified as 17-year-old Ernesto Manzano Jr., was riding downhill at high speed against traffic. He reportedly collided into a northbound vehicle, according to the Monterey Park Police Department. Manzano died at the scene. “The driver of the vehicle stopped after the collision and is cooperating with the investigation. Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a factor at this time,” according to the Monterey Park Police Department in a written statement.

The unidentified suspect surrendered to Monterey Park Police officers outside a home in the 1700 block of Alisar Avenue. Officers found the suspect with his hands up. He was detained without incident, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The suspect, only identified as a Hispanic man in his 30s, called 9-1-1 and told dispatchers he killed someone. “When officers entered the residence, they found a female Hispanic in her 60’s with multiple stab wounds to the upper torso. She was pronounced dead at the scene,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Two knives were recovered at the scene. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK - A man and woman were arrested during a traffic stop and found with stolen property after a vigilant resident witnessed the couple looking into homes.
The couple, identified as Jorge Favella and Lorraine Mendoza of Los Angeles, were seen just after 8 a.m. April 11 in the 1100 block of Dover Way. One of the suspects was witnessed entering a yard from the rear of the property and emerged later with items in hand, according to the Monterey Park Police Department. The couple was stopped after reportedly attempting to flee in the vehicle. Officers found stolen property inside their vehicle. After the couple was arrested, officers then discovered evidence of two additional home burglaries, Monterey Park Police said. Favela, 41, was booked on suspicion of residential burglary. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. Mendoza, 49, was also booked on suspicion of residential burglary. She is being held without bail, incidentally for having an outstanding no-bail warrant for residential burglary. The couple were scheduled for an appearance in Alhambra Superior Court Tuesday, April 14. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK - A driver and passenger received moderate injuries Sunday after the vehicle they were in rolled over. The crash occurred at Casuda Canyon Drive and Garvey Avenue around 1:16 a.m. Alhambra and Monterey Park Police both responded. Witnesses reported the vehicle rolled multiple times before resting on its roof. Officers arrived and found one person trapped in the vehicle. One person had climbed out and was walking around, according to the Alhambra Police Department.
“Officers found evidence at the scene leading them to believe that alcohol and nitrous oxide may have been involved,” Alhambra Police. Monterey Park Police are investigating the crash. The crash was reported around 2:54 p.m. February 9. One person died at the scene. An injured person had to be extricated from one of the vehicles and was hospitalized. Their condition is not publicly known. Monterey Park Police have not answered numerous calls seeking additional information. |
