Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK - Authorities provided some details regarding an incident in Alhambra that may be connected to Monterey Park shooting that left 10 dead and 10 wounded.
In Alhambra, a city just north of Monterey Park, an Asian male was disarmed of a weapon after he walked in to Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio, 121 S. Garfield Ave., about 17 to 20 minutes after the mass shooting. The connection, if any, remains unclear. A white cargo van was seen leaving the area by witnesses. The gunman in Monterey Park is described as an Asian male between 30 and 50 years old. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said this description is preliminary as witnesses gave differing descriptions of a suspect. After receiving a gunfire call at 10:23 p.m., Monterey Park police officers encountered patrons of Star Ballroom Dance Studio, 122 W. Garvey Ave. Some were wounded. Officers entered the building and found more wounded and 10 killed. Authorities said five males and five females were killed inside Star Ballroom. The shooting occurred near, but not at, Lunar New Year celebrations. The FBI has joined the investigation, as well as the California Office of Emergency Services. Monterey Park officers normally off at this time have been called to provide extra patrols in the city, according to Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese. President Joseph Biden issued a statement on the shooting. “Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in last night’s deadly mass shooting in Monterey Park. I’m monitoring this situation closely as it develops, and urge the community to follow guidance from local officials and law enforcement in the hours ahead,” Biden said. “The men and women of the Sheriff’s Department join me in extending our condolences to the countless families affected by this shooting and they will remain constantly in the minds of our investigators. I see it in their eyes. They want to get this guy,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is urged to call 323-890-5500. Remain anonymous by calling LA regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), through the P3Tips mobile app, or lacrimestoppers.org. |
