Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A suicidal man is in safe hands Wednesday after threatening to jump off an overpass Tuesday night, police said. The 26-year-old Inglewood man was found by Pomona officers responding to a possible jumper on the Dudley Street overpass around 10:16 p.m. January 30. The man appeared to be under the influence of drugs and suffering from a mental health crisis, Pomona Police said. Pomona Police crisis negotiators worked for more than two hours to get the man safely down. They even gave him a cigarette at his request, Pomona Police said.
The California Highway Patrol, Pomona Police and Los Angeles County Fire Department worked to eventually bring the man down after negotiations stalled, Pomona Police said. Officers arrived to an apartment complex in the 200 block of West Grove Avenue around 3:21 a.m. January 25 on a report of screams heard within the complex. Officers found a trail of blood leading to a unit, Pomona Police said. Officers discovered a 65-year-old man suffering from stab wounds. Paramedics were called and pronounced the man dead at the scene, Pomona Police said.

The teen was hospitalized for head trauma after being struck by a vehicle at Alvarado Street and Garey Avenue around 6:17 a.m. January 23, according to the Pomona Police Department. The driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The Pomona Police Major Accident Investigation Team is at the scene. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – Seven women accused of soliciting prostitution were jailed recently as Pomona Police continue efforts to improve quality of life in town. The women were arrested during the third week of January along the Holt Avenue Corridor as part of a “no tolerance approach” to prostitution activities, according to the Pomona Police Department. The following women were booked on suspicion of loitering to commit prostitution:
Loitering with intent to commit prostitution in California is a misdemeanor. If someone is convicted of this crime they could possibly face being imprisoned in the county jail for up to six months, be fined up to one thousand dollars, or both, Pomona Police said. The operation was conducted by the Pomona Police Department Major Crimes Task Force. The incident unfolded around 1 p.m. at Garey Avenue and Mission Boulevard January 14. The vehicle’s license plate was checked and the SUV was reported stolen out of San Bernardino, according to Lt. Eddie Vasquez of the Pomona Police Department. Pomona Police Chief Michael Olivieri, who frequently patrols the Pomona streets, tracked down the stolen Ford Expedition to Kadota Avenue and East Grand Avenue several minutes later where, with the help of backup, the suspect was arrested, Vasquez said. Arrested was Jose Torres Jr., a 29-year-old Pomona man. He was booked on suspicion of grand theft auto. The enforcement operation is being conducted as part of the department’s ongoing traffic safety campaign. The operation will begin at 7 p.m. Friday and conclude 3 a.m. January 12. Officers will focus on areas of town with statistically higher frequencies of DUI arrests and/or collisions, Pomona Police said. Enforcement operation funding is provided to the Pomona Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – The victim found dead in a parking lot January 4 may not have died in a crime, but rather a fall, police announced Monday. The unidentified man was found in a parking lot in the 3300 block of Pomona Boulevard around 6:50 a.m. At the time, detectives believed the man’s injuries were caused by a sharp/blunt object, according to the Pomona Police Department.
“At this time, we do not believe the decedent was a victim of a crime,” Pomona Police said in a written statement.

Firefighters responded to a report of a man down and not breathing in the 3300 block of Pomona Boulevard around 6:50 a.m. January 4. Firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene, according to the Pomona Police Department. There is no suspect or suspect vehicle description available. The patrols were conducted from 7 p.m. December 31 to 3 a.m. January 1. The suspect arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence was additionally booked on suspicion of grand theft auto and resisting arrest, Pomona Police said. In addition to the above arrests, officers conducted 25 enforcement stops, issued 14 citations and cited/arrested two drivers who had suspended or revoked licenses, Pomona Police said. |
