The suspect was shot and killed by a Pomona police officer after the sword-wielding man reportedly advanced towards the officer with the weapon in hand, Sheriff’s homicide investigators said in a written statement. Police originally responded to the 200 block of South Reservoir Street at 7:15 p.m. March 30 for an assault with a deadly weapon report. The suspect, only describe as a Hispanic man in his 40s, died at the scene. Deshawn Sanders, 22, pleaded no contest to multiple charges, including human trafficking, pimping and assault with a deadly weapon -- stemming from a December 28, 2017 investigation on the Holt Avenue corridor, Pomona Police said. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison and must register as a sex offender for life for another agency’s investigation of a minor being trafficked, Pomona Police said.
Sanders was arrested April 28, 2018 for his crimes. The Los Angeles Police Department Human Trafficking Unit and the Los Angeles Regional Human Trafficking Unit also investigated Sanders trafficking victims in their jurisdictions. One of these cases involved a minor as a victim, Pomona Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Two Pomona men were arrested Friday night after initially refusing to exit their apartment unit during the execution of a search warrant, Pomona police said. The search warrant was executed at a complex at 586 E. Phillips Blvd., March 27 at 9:30 p.m. Three occupants in the unit complied with officers and exited, but two men, identified as Christopher Perez and Saul Rojas, refused to comply, according to the Pomona Police Department. Perez and Rojas ended the standoff and were taken into custody. Officers entered the unit and discovered two assault rifles, two handguns, armor piercing bullets, high-capacity magazines, narcotics and money. “All of the evidence collected suggested a drug sales operation and one of the assault rifles was found to be reported stolen,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. Perez is a convicted felon and officers accuse him of harboring the items found inside the apartment, Pomona police said.
Perez and Rojas, the ladder in violation of his probation, were arrested. Perez was booked on suspicion of narcotics sales with possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance for sales, being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, possessing a high-capacity magazine and possession of a stolen firearm. Perez was booked on suspicion of the parole violation. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A student found unresponsive in a residence hall at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Saturday was declared dead by Los Angeles County firefighters, school officials said. In an email sent to students March 28, the student was found unresponsive in a room at Sicomoro Hall. Campus authorities stated that there are no safety concerns for the campus and the residential community related to the isolated incident. The student was identified as 19-year-old Caleb Luke Lee, a Tustin resident, according to Lt. Nani Cholakians of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Lee died by hanging. His death was ruled a suicide, according to public coroner records. Firefighters were called to the university at 2 a.m. Saturday, according to a representative with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters were told of an unresponsive person who was cold to the touch.
This is the second student death on campus this year. Noah Kendrix, 24, was found dead in the University Village, 3400 Poly Vista, February 6. Kendrix’s cause of death is still deferred, pending additional investigation. Sicomoro Hall officially opened January 17, 2020. The eight-story building is one of the newest residence halls on campus and can house approximately 450 students. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A woman was arrested early Thursday after she crashed during a reckless pursuit. Pomona resident Sonya Sifuentes, 35, began evading officers who tried to perform a traffic stop around 12:08 a.m. after discovering the vehicle she drove was stolen, according to the Pomona Police Department. She sped off from officers at Garvey Avenue and Fernleaf Avenue, leading them along main and side streets until crashing into a parked vehicle at Grand Avenue and Gibbs Street, Pomona Police said. Sifuentes tried to run after she crashed, but officers quickly caught her.
The passenger suffered leg and head pain. Paramedics treated the passenger at the scene. A loaded handgun was found in the stolen vehicle, Pomona Police said. “d been arrested recently for a gun possession charge in a similar type of incident where she was investigated by the Major Crimes Task Force as well,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. Sifuentes was booked on suspicion of felony evading, grand theft auto, being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm and a probation violation. Sifuentes has two outstanding no-bail warrants. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Despite receiving help, a man died at the scene of a shooting Monday night, Pomona Police said. Officers responded to Viewpoint Circle near Skyview Circle to investigate a gun fire call just before 7 p.m. March 23. Family members of the victim reported the shooting, Pomona Police said in a written statement. The Pomona Police department did not specify if the shooting was self-inflicted or if a suspect is possibly outstanding.

West Covina man Derrick Miller, 34, was approached by officers at Loranne Avenue and Monterey Avenue around 10:18 p.m. Officers believed Miller’s presence suspicious, Pomona Police said. “Miller was in possession of multiple open containers of alcohol. A search of his car revealed a loaded .380 handgun. Also in the car were thirteen ecstasy pills,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. “Miller admitted to ownership of the handgun and the street drugs. Miller was found to be a convicted felon as well.”

Three vehicle violations were witnessed by an officer that led to a traffic stop: the driver made an illegal u-turn, the vehicle sported dark window tint and the driver failed to signal when turning to enter a freeway on-ramp, Pomona Police said. The driver was followed from the 2400 block of South Garey Avenue when the illegal u-turn was made. The front right passenger, identified as 21-year-old Juan Michel, told officers that he had a loaded handgun in a front pocket, Pomona Police said.
“He [ Michel] was removed from the car and a .45 caliber handgun was located on him. He was cooperative during the investigation and was arrested without further incident,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. Michel was booked on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm and carrying a loaded firearm inside a motor vehicle. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Detectives arrested two men March 17 who were accused of violently beating and stabbing a man outside a convenience store in February. 25-year-old Jeremiah Mendez and 24-year-old Fernando Mendez, both Ontario residents, were taken into custody outside their home in the 1800 block of East Fifth Street as they sat an a parked vehicle. The brutal attack occurred outside a convenience store in the 1500 block of N. Indian Hill Blvd. the suspects approached the victim who is standing outside of the store and punched and stabbed him, Pomona Police said.
The victim underwent surgery after surviving the attack, Pomona Police said. Both suspects were booked on suspicion of attempted murder and a criminal street gang enhancement, Pomona Police said. Jeremiah is being held without bail. Fernando is being held in lieu of $2 million bail ahead of a schedule appearance in Pomona superior Court Friday, March 20, According to Los Angeles County booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Police arrested a man Thursday morning after he led them on a pursuit, during which he allegedly tried to dump methamphetamine out his vehicle. Police arrested Jose Luis Cabrera, a 28-year-old known gang member, in the driveway of his home after he fled from officers. Police witnessed Cabrera driving at high speed at White Avenue and Monterey Avenue around 12:17 a.m. March 19, according to the Pomona Police Department. Cabrera refused to stop when officers tried to pull him over and he drove recklessly around the city. Once Cabrera stopped, he struggled with officers who detained him, Pomona Police said.
“It was learned that during the pursuit, Suspect Cabrera made desperate attempts to discard a large quantity of methamphetamine,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. “Traces of the drug residue was found spread about the inside of his car. Despite his actions, several grams of methamphetamine were recovered.” A search warrant was served at Cabrera’s home where three firearms, several rounds of ammunition, body armor and a high capacity gun magazine, methamphetamine, marijuana, packaging material and nearly $3,300, Pomona Police said. Cabrera was booked on suspicion of felony evading, possession of a controlled substance for sales and for violating his probation. Additional charges will be filed against the suspect or suspects responsible for the items found during the search, Pomona Police said. |
