Gonzalo Avila, 40, was arrested March 26 by members of the Pomona Police Special Investigations Unit and Major Crimes Task Force. He was booked on suspicion of murder in the shooting of 29-year-old Anastasio Ezequiel Miranda from San Bernardino, according to the Pomona Police Department. Miranda was gunned down and left for dead in the south alley behind 420 E. Olive Ave. March 23. Officers were called to the scene around 1:15 p.m. Avila, identified as a local gang member, is also accused of trying to gun down two others. The two surviving victims were hospitalized. Avila was found in San Dimas with the assistance of the Fontana Police Department. An arrest warrant was written and Avila was taken into custody, the Pomona Police Department said. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm against Avila. Officers were called to the south alley behind the 400 block of East Olive Street around 1 p.m. to a man down March 23. The as-of-yet unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Pomona Police Department. Two additional victims were found wounded: a Pomona man, who was last listed in critical condition, and an El Monte man who was listed as stable, according to the Pomona Police Department. The motive for the crime is not yet known. It is unclear if detectives have obtained a suspect description. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – A traffic stop for expired registration tabs unveiled a gang banger transporting drugs, a gun and ammunition, the Pomona Police Department said.
A patrol officer, along with his trainee, made the traffic stop March 16 in the area of Seventh Street and White Avenue around 1:26 a.m. The driver was also found to be driving with a suspended license, according to the Pomona Police Department. A backup officer arrived and recognized the driver, Rudy Woo, as an active gang member. “The Officer knew Woo to be an active gang member, convicted felon, on probation, and out on bail from two previous arrests. Based on Woo’s probationary status, Officers explained to him that his car was subject to search, at which point, Woo admitted to possessing a loaded firearm in the car,” according to the Pomona Police Department in a written statement. Officers also found multiple handgun magazines, ammunition suspected methamphetamine and marijuana, according to the Pomona Police Department. Woo, 43, was booked on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance with a firearm, possession of a controlled substance for sales, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of a loaded & unregistered firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and being a felon in possession of ammunition. Officers with the Pomona Police Department’s Sexual Exploitation & Trafficking Team saw the scantily-clad 26-year-old in the 1000 block of East Holt Avenue March 12. After reportedly witnessing the woman enter multiple vehicles, they determined she was engaged in prostitution. “She was also found to have several outstanding warrants for her arrest. Once in custody, she was also found to be in possession of a loaded firearm concealed in her purse. The firearm was loaded with a high-capacity magazine and the serial number had been removed,” according to the Pomona Police Department in a written statement. San Diego woman Deja Nicole Smith was booked on suspicion of loitering with intent to solicit prostitution, being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, possession of a concealed firearm, possession of a high-capacity magazine, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, possession of an unregistered firearm and for outstanding warrants, according to the Pomona Police Department. Officers responded to the 200 block of Ridgeway Street around 12:11 a.m. to a call of a person laying in the roadway. They found that person suffering from a possible gunshot. Several yards away, another man was found gravely wounded from possible gunfire, according to the Pomona Police Department. “Members of the L.A. Co. Fire Department responded and pronounced both victims deceased at the scene,” according to the Pomona Police Department in a written statement. Investigators with the department’s Major Crimes Unit believe the shootings occurred around 11:30 p.m. March 8. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - The California Highway Patrol issued a Sig Alert for two hours affecting several lanes on the eastbound I-10 freeway just west of Kellogg Drive after a semi hauling Coca-Cola overturned and spilled its load Saturday morning.
The No 3 and 4 lanes will be blocked while workers upright the trailer and semi, which overturned on its roof, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported to the CHP around 5:42 a.m. March 5. The semi hauling a 65-foot fully-loaded trailer possibly collided with two sedans, according to CHP traffic logs. Much Coca-Cola reportedly has spilled onto the roadway. It is not publicly clear if there were any injuries. Officers responded to the shooting around 6:08 p.m. in the 1400 block of Laurel Avenue March 1. Officers learned the occupant of a SUV fired on the teen as the vehicle pulled up to him, according to the Pomona Police Department. As the investigation continued, a search of the surrounding area yielded a suspect vehicle, which was stopped and searched in the 1100 block of South Towne Avenue. Pomona Police detectives took over the investigation and determined the SUV’s four occupants were involved in the shooting, according to the Pomona Police Department.
