Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - One person was taken to a nearby hospital, the victim of a reported vehicle-to-vehicle shooting on the eastbound I-10 freeway Friday. The victim wound up in the parking lot of a McDonald’s, 2145 Murchison Ave., after being involved in the shooting. Firefighters were called to the McDonald’s at 6:55 p.m. and transported one victim to an area trauma center, according to Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornellas of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A Sig Alert was issued for all eastbound lanes of the I-10 freeway at the 57 interchange, according to Officer Dion Conley of the California Highway Patrol.
The shooting apparently occurred on freeway lanes somewhere east of the 57 interchange. CHP officers are combing lanes to look for evidence. The Sig Alert may last until possibly 9:30 p.m. Descriptions of a suspect and suspect vehicle are not readily available. A suspect described as a Black man opened fire on a 57-year-old man and 27-year-old woman in the 700 block of North Park Avenue June 26 around 5:46 a.m. The victims and suspect fled the scene before police arrived, Pomona Police said in a written statement.
The man and woman were seated in a vehicle when the suspect opened fire. Officers arrived on scene and collected evidence of a shooting, Pomona Police said. No clothing description for the suspect was provided. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Pomona Police at 909-620-2085. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - The man seriously burned after his car ignited in a solo traffic collision died from his injuries, police reported. The driver was pulled from his burning Honda Pilot after crashing into a pole on West Temple Avenue and South University Drive just after 1 p.m. June 23. The driver was taken by helicopter to an area hospital for treatment. Investigators followed up on the driver’s status Monday morning and were told by hospital staff that the driver died, Pomona Police said.
The driver was identified at the scene, but it is not known if next of kin was notified. The driver’s name remains publicly unknown. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A rifle, handgun, silencer, several magazines and hundreds of rounds of ammunition was seized during a warrant service at a known gang member’s residence last week, Pomona Police said. 37-year-old Pomona man Jose Rivera was arrested by the Pomona Police Special Investigations Unit during a traffic stop June 19 for an outstanding warrant. Rivera was on probation for an unrelated case and was subject to search and seizure conditions, Pomona Police said. The Special Investigation Unit, with assistance from the department’s Major Crimes Task Force, secured Rivera’s home and soon had a search warrant signed and authored.
“Following a search of the residence, Officers located an AR-15 assault rifle, a .44 magnum revolver, a silencer, several handgun and rifle magazines and hundreds of rounds of ammunition,” Pomona Police said. Rivera was booked on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, possession of an assault rifle and possession of a silencer, Pomona Police said. The crash occurred around 1 p.m. June 23. A passerby pulled the unconscious driver away after the Honda Pilot caught fire, according to the Pomona Police Department. The unconscious driver suffered unspecified burns, according to Dispatch Supervisor Art Marrujo of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The crash in middle lanes was reported to officers at 4:27 a.m. The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:41 a.m. A Sig Alert was issued at 4:55 a.m., according to the CHP Traffic Management Center.

Officers from the Pomona Police Department, Azusa Police Department and California Highway Patrol conducted the undercover sting along the Holt Avenue Corridor. Undercover officers contacted suspected customers (aka “Johns”) and prostitutes. Uniformed officers arrested the suspects after sex acts were negotiated for money, Pomona Police said.

Police responded to a reported stabbing victim outside the school, 321 W. Lexington Ave., around 1:20 p.m. June 20 and found the teen suffering from multiple wounds. Officers canvassed the area and located a suspect, according to the Pomona Police Department.

The fireworks confiscated so far have an estimated street value of $18,650. Officers are conducting undercover operations to seek out sellers of illegal fireworks, according to the Pomona Police Department. The operation to rid Pomona streets of illegal fireworks was publicized June 11. Those who sold the illegal fireworks were issued citations, Pomona Police said. Police are emphasizing the fact that even “safe and sane” fireworks are illegal in the City of Pomona “Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks - devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death,“ Pomona Police said. The checkpoint was held at Garey Avenue and Monterey Avenue from 9 p.m.to 3 a.m. The citywide patrols were held from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. In addition to the three suspected DUI arrests, 36 drivers were arrested or cited for unlicensed driving, or driving on a suspended or revoked license. 17 vehicles were towed, the Pomona Police Department said.
