The suspect, 28-year-old Fernando Lopez, admitted to knowing he was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle. He was also in possession of shaved keys, according to the Pomona Police Department. An officer located the known stolen truck in the 1700 block of Gillette Road around 10:43 p.m. The officer followed the suspect onto the west I-10 freeway.
The suspect began driving erratically, likely after spotting the officer. A pursuit was initiated, according to the Pomona Police Department. Lopez crashed into the center divider on the west I-10 freeway near Grand Avenue and was arrested. Lopez was booked on suspicion of grand theft auto, felony evading and possession of burglary tools, Pomona Police said. Officers responding to a call of a traffic collision at Grand Avenue and Buena Vista Avenue at 10:21 p.m. July 23 found a vehicle that crashed into a vehicle that was parked, according to the Pomona Police Department. The victim, found in grave condition, was hospitalized, but did not survive, Pomona Police said.
“At this time, it appears the vehicle was traveling westbound on Grand Ave at a high rate of speed when it lost control and collided with a parked vehicle. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor at this time,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. Investigators could not find and witnesses to the crash. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - An 18-year-old unlicensed driver was allegedly high on marijuana when he crashed into a vehicle occupied by a family while evading an officer, Pomona Police said. The crash occurred at Holt Avenue and Eleanor Street at 8:53 p.m. July 20. A police supervisor attempted to intercept a high-speed black BMW westbound on the East Holt Corridor. The driver ran a red light and crashed into an occupied red Honda, according to the Pomona Police Department.
A family, including a pregnant driver, was inside the Honda. The driver was hospitalized and is expected to make a full recovery, Pomona Police said. The suspect, Anthony Urbina, a Diamond Bar resident, was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs resulting in a traffic collision and driving without a valid driver license. Police responded to a shooting around 10:54 p.m. in the 300 block of East Phillips Boulevard July 14. The unidentified victim was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, according to the Pomona Police Department.
The victim underwent surgery, but succumbed to his injuries, Pomona Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – The area at Phillips Ranch Road and Village Loop Road is expected to be closed for a few hours after a suspect fleeing San Bernardino deputies crashed into a light pole Tuesday. The crash occurred just before 3:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found a vehicle overturned and a sheared hydrant, according to Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The suspect was taken to an area hospital, Pittman told SGV CityWatch. The suspect is in critical condition, according to Lt. Todd Samuels of the Pomona Police Department. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A 27-year-old Pomona man was arrested July 4, accused of gunning down another man four years ago during what police believe was a robbery. Jesus Hernandez of Pomona was identified in 2019 as the suspected murderer of 24-year-old Jorge Garcia, also from Pomona. Hernandez was initially arrested on an unrelated firearm possession violation. As the investigation continued, police obtained more evidence that he was the shooter, Pomona Police said.
Garcia was shot and killed September 24, 2016 in the 2400 block of South Garey Avenue around 12:07 a.m. He was already deceased when officers found him, Pomona Police said. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged Hernandez with homicide July 7, in addition to the firearm possession charge. |
