The 16-year-old girl was rescued during a related suppression operation Saturday, October 27. The girl was interviewed by members of the Pomona Police Major Crimes Task Force and was given appropriate resources, Pomona Police said. Pomona officers continue to execute such operations along the Holt Avenue corridor in response to numerous complaints of activity from residents and business owners in the area. “The goal of the operation was to target prostitution related crimes and focus attention on the entire Holt Corridor with a priority placed on recovering juveniles, arresting prostitutes and arresting johns,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. More than 500 marijuana plants weighing 120 pounds was discovered inside the commercial business at 560 W. Holt Ave. October 24. The people responsible for the grow were not at the business, Pomona Police said. Los Angeles County Firefighters and Southern California Edison workers responded to the power lines down at 10:57 p.m. and found arcing wires hanging from a power pole. The cause for the downed wires was a power overload from the business mentioned and SoCal Edison and firefighters noted the issue was consistent with a marijuana grow operation, Pomona Police said. Officers found a door ajar to the business and discovered the marijuana after a safety search of the business. It is unclear if police have identified any suspects. The gang shooting took place around 2:45 p.m. Police responded to calls of a possible drive-by shooting in the 1100 block of Cornelia Street October 21. The 10-year-old boy shot in the chest wound up at a hospital after police arrived to the scene, police said. The boy was listed in stable condition. A camera caught a 2007 to 2015 white four-door Scion XB arrive to the 1100 block of Cornelia Street. A passenger exited and began shooting at a crowd of people, according to the Pomona Police Department. The shooter fled back into the Scion and it was seen being driven away from the scene. The gunman is a light-complected Black man wearing a greenish/grey hooded sweatshirt. The driver is a Black man wearing a blue top and red sweatpants. The boy is listed in stable condition after being taken to a local hospital. The boy was shot in the shoulder around 2:50 p.m., according to Acting Lt. Brian Hagerty of the Pomona Police Department. Pomona Police Dispatch received multiple calls of a possibly drive-by shooting in the 1100 block of Cornelia Street, Hagerty said. Pomona Police dispatch were then called of the wounded boy’s presence at a local hospital. “It looks like the victim was not the intended target and could be possibly gang related,” Hagerty said. No suspect description was given. Police discovered the stolen vehicle and tried to stop the driver at North Towne Avenue and Holt Avenue around 1:17 a.m. The driver fled officers onto the eastbound I-10 freeway from Towne, according to Lt. Marcus Perez of the Pomona Police Department. Officers lost sight of the blacked out car on the eastbound I-10 freeway at Monte Vista and terminated the pursuit, Perez said. Officers focused their efforts along the Holt Avenue corridor, an area known for high crime activity, making 11 arrests of women suspected of loitering to commit prostitution. Two subject were arrested on suspicion of pimping and one subject was arrested on a parole violation directly related to previous pimping charges, Pomona Police said. Leslie Olivera, 37, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Investigators do not believe foul play was a role in Olivera’s death, according to the Pomona Police Department. Acquaintances of Olivera went looking for her after she had not been seen in a while. They discovered her body near a pitched tent and belongings believed to be Olivera’s, Pomona Police said. Olivera’s body was found around 1:45 p.m. Friday, October 5 in the 3300 block of West Temple Avenue. Police discovered the double homicide while investigating a call for a welfare check in the 1400 block of West McKinley Avenue October 6. The victims, only described as a man and woman, suffered from a single gunshot wound, according to Sgt. Brian Hagerty of the Pomona Police Department. Police discovered the bodies around 11:20 a.m. Evidence at the scene suggests there are no outstanding suspects and there is no threat to the public, Hagerty said. Sergio Valdes, 43, stabbed his father multiple times during a reported unprovoked attack inside a residence on Blackbird Lane around 9:30 a.m. During the attack, Valdes armed himself with a kitchen knife and stabbed his father, according to Sgt. Jon Edson of the Pomona Police Department. The father, 71-year-old Ernesto Valdes, died after being taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Sergio was found and arrested a short distance away, Edson said. A motive for the stabbing is unknown. Charges are pending with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Sergio is being held in lieu of $2 million bail and is scheduled to appear in Pomona Superior Court Thursday, October 4. |
