A full brush response was sent to the fire, but the quick work of the initial firefighters to arrive kept flames from spreading, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The California Highway Patrol has shut down the on ramp to the north 57 freeway at Temple Avenue. The fire is burning near the right shoulder. A passerby on the freeway apparently pulled over to extinguish the flames when the fire first started, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. Firefighters will be checking for any damage to structures above on the hillside, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Officers also arrested or cited 46 other drivers on suspicion of driving without a license, or driving on a suspended or revoked license. 15 vehicles were also impounded, according to the Pomona Police Department. The checkpoint was held from 9 p.m. October 23 to 3 a.m. October 24 at Holt Avenue and Hershey Street. Additional officers were also conducting roving DUI patrols from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests. In 2018, Pomona Police Department investigated 127 DUI collisions that injured 49 people, according to the Pomona Police Department. The suspect, 29-year-old Ernie Castro of Highland, tussled with officers who ran after him when he decided to flee and detained him for suspicious activity. During the foot chase, Castro ditched what was later discovered to be a replica handgun and also possessed a dagger and machete, according to the Pomona Police Department. The Pomona Police Department’s Major Crimes Task Force was conducting gang suppression work around 11:40 p.m. in the 2900 block of Battram Street when they came upon Castro at Willie White Park, Pomona Police said.
“Officers attempted to stop a suspicious pedestrian who was later identified as Ernie Castro. During the contact, Castro made a quick movement to conceal his hand and then suddenly ran,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. Castro was booked on suspicion of resisting arrest, resisting arrest using force against officers, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, public intoxication and additionally booked for a no-bail warrant and warrant for a weapons violation, Pomona Police said. Officers discovered the three wounded teens all fled to different locations after the shooting, which took place in the 1600 block of East Holt Avenue around 6:46 p.m. October 10. The teens were in the empty parking lot when a vehicle was driven up to them and the suspects open fire, according to Lt. Ryan Rodriguez of the Pomona Police Department. The male teens, who ranged in age from 14 to 16 years old, were hospitalized with injuries considered not life-threatening, Rodriguez told SGV CityWatch. The suspects fled in a light-colored four-door sedan. The suspect was stopped just before 12:30 a.m. Friday at Hamilton Boulevard and Muir Avenue. The suspect’s vehicle reportedly had no license plates. The officer searched the suspect vehicle after the officer saw the paraphernalia within, according to the Pomona Police Department. “Officers searched the rest of the car and found suspected methamphetamine and a loaded firearm,” the Pomona Police Department said in a written statement.
Joseph Armienta, A 40-year-old Pomona man, was arrested and booked on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance while armed with a firearm, Being a felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – Police reportedly found a loaded 9-millimeter handgun, heroin and methamphetamine during a probation search of a known gang member’s home October 3. Officers with the Pomona Police Major Crimes Task Force searched the home of David “Vago” Valles in the 300 block of Otis Court after contacting him while on patrol. Knowing Valles is a probationer, in addition to being a gang member previously arrested for gun possession, officers conducted a compliance check, according to the Pomona Police Department.
Valles was cooperative during the search. Valles, 41, was booked on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance while armed with a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The teen was found shot October 1 near Lincoln Avenue and Caswell Avenue around 11 p.m. by officers responding to a call of gunfire. The teen was taken to an area hospital where he later died, according to the Pomona Police Department. The suspect or suspects involved are still apparently unknown. A motive is also unknown. The day after the shooting, a teen was arrested near the scene of the shooting after a report of gunfire heard in the area. Officers tried speaking with several people at a vigil for the shooting victim when a teen boy ran.
The arrested teen allegedly disposed of a loaded handgun during the foot chase. He was eventually booked on suspicion of gun possession, Pomona Police said. The collision was reported to Pomona Police around 2:36 p.m. Thursday at East First Street and San Lorenzo Street, which is near East End Avenue. Firefighters and officers located the male victim dead on arrival, according to the Pomona Police Department. The events leading up to the fatal crash have yet to be made public.
