CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Pomona man is facing a DUI charge, accused of driving in opposing lanes of the I-10 freeway Thursday. A CHP officer intercepted the alleged DUI driver near the 57 freeway and intentionally struck the suspect’s vehicle to prevent a major collision, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP dispatchers began receiving calls of a wrong way driver on the eastbound I-10 near Milliken Avenue around 2:24 a.m. CHP Baldwin Park and Rancho Cucamonga units responded, according to the CHP. A traffic break was started east of the 57 freeway when the wrong way driver was spotted. “The officers used their patrol vehicle to intentionally collide with the wrong-way driver's vehicle, successfully causing it to spin out. The wrong-way vehicle then struck another civilian vehicle before coming to a complete stop,” according to the CHP in a written statement. The CHP officer’s unit also hit the center divider. Both the suspect and civilian driver were assessed, the latter received minor injuries. The officers also suffered minor injuries. Pomona man 22-year-old Javier Gudino was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence. He is being held in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station jail, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON
CityWatch Editor POMONA - A motorcyclist died in a collision on Indian Hill Avenue Monday afternoon. The crash occurred in the 1500 block of South Indian Hill Avenue, which kept that section of roadway closed in both directions for several hours. The crash occurred around 4:20 p.m. First responders found the motorcyclist down and unresponsive on the asphalt. Life saving measures were performed on the motorcyclist. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the Pomona Police Department. The driver of the car remained at the scene and spoke with investigators. The Pomona Police Major Accident Investigation Team is working the crash. CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Montclair man is facing a slew of charges, including two counts of murder, resulting from an October 4 pursuit in which he crashed and killed two of his passengers. Erick Bolanos, 30, allegedly committed several vehicle code violations while driving in the area of White Avenue and Mission Boulevard October 4 around 4:30 p.m. Bolanos allegedly refused to stop for officers and a pursuit was initiated, according to the Pomona Police Department. Bolanos chucked a handgun out the window while evading officers at high speed. Officers made multiple attempts to stop him using the Pursuit Intervention Technique, but failed , according to the Pomona Police Department. Bolanos reportedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed, killing his two occupants. No other vehicles were involved, according to the Pomona Police Department. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed two counts of murder, one count of felony evading causing serious bodily injury and one count of possessing a concealed firearm in a vehicle, according to the Pomona Police Department. While not providing details on why the death is suspicious, the Pomona Police Department went as far as describing the death as a homicide. First responders were sent to a residence in the 1700 block of East Mission Boulevard around 10:24 p.m. October 8. Los Angeles County firefighters discovered the dead man after extinguishing the flames, according to the Pomona Police Department. CityWatch Editor POMONA - A man allegedly under the influence reportedly had to be subdued with a stun gun when he allegedly tried to assault officers with a tree branch after climbing to the roof of a 7-Eleven, September 12. The incident unfolded at the 7-Eleven, 1546 W. Mission Blvd. The man was reportedly seen walking on the roof of the convenience store. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation for three hours, according to the Pomona Police Department. At one point, the man jumped from the roof of the 7-Eleven and grabbed a large tree branch. Eventually, the man came down, but was allegedly combative with officers and tried to beat them with a tree branch, according to the Pomona Police Department. The man, Arturo Torres, a 53-year-old San Gabriel resident, was eventually subdued with a stun gun and taken into custody. He was booked on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance, resisting a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon likely to produce great bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon likely to produce great bodily injury on a peace officer, and disturbing the peace. Torres is being held in lieu of $65,000 bail at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic. CityWatch Editor POMONA - Shooting suspects remain at-large Saturday after a gun battle in a shopping center parking lot the night prior left one victim hospitalized. Multiple suspects reportedly opened fire on each other in the parking lot of the shuttered 99 Cents Only Store, 606 E. Holt Ave., September 6 around 6:48 p.m. One victim was struck in the leg, according to Sgt. Lewis of the Pomona Police Department. The victim’s wounds are considered not life-threatening. CityWatch Editor POMONA - One driver died at the scene of a two-vehicle collision early Friday. The crash occurred in the 4100 block of Valley Boulevard around 8:52 a.m. August 16. First responders found one of the drivers laying on the ground and unresponsive. The driver, only described as a man, died at the scene, according to the Pomona Police Department. The other driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. It is unclear if that other driver sustained any injuries. Both east and west traffic lanes in the 4100 block of Valley Boulevard will remain closed for several hours during an investigation. |
