Fernando Lopez, 31, was taken into custody in Corona May 23 after ditching his reportedly stolen ride. Officers attempted to stop him near White Avenue and Holt Avenue, according to the Pomona Police Department. The incident began at 11:15 a.m. Lopez allegedly fled police at high speed, ignored stop signs and drove in opposing lanes of traffic. The pursuit took to the southbound 71 freeway into Corona, according to the Pomona Police Department. Lopez escaped his vehicle on Serfas Club Drive. An Ontario Police helicopter located Lopez in a tree. Lopez was booked on suspicion of felony evading, grand theft auto, possession of burglary tools, possession of a controlled substance and driving on a suspended license, according to the Pomona Police Department. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – An estimated $7,000 in donated gifts meant for needy children were taken from a storage container over the weekend, the Pomona Police Department reported.
The broken container was discovered June 6 around 2 p.m. by Pomona Police officers. Taken were several bicycles, Disney toys, Lego sets and Supreme bags, according to the Pomona Police Department. The stolen donations were given by community partners, or were purchased with funds donated to the Pomona Police Department Community Programs Unit. “The Pomona Police Department Community Services Unit works year-round soliciting donations and fundraising to provide Christmas joy to families that would otherwise go without during the holiday season,” according to the Pomona Police Department in a written statement. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Chino man lost control of the semi he allegedly stole and crashed into parked vehicles, a power pole, a cinder block wall and a house while fleeing Pomona officers Saturday.
The semi’s owner tracked down the stolen truck after it was taken from a Montclair tire shop. He called Pomona Police around 12:19 p.m. after finding it still being driven, according to the Pomona Police Department. Officers attempted to stop the suspect in the area of Reservoir Street and Philadelphia Street, but the driver refused to yield and fled eastbound on Philadelphia, Pomona Police said. The driver crashed the semi near Pipeline Avenue and Philadelphia Street in Chino. He was immediately taken into custody. Matthew Paul Gonzalez, a 27-year-old Chino resident, was medically cleared at a local hospital and booked into the Pomona jail on suspicion of grand theft auto. Several homes were left without power and the unoccupied home struck by the semi sustained major structural damage, Pomona Police said. The suspect, 28-year-old Fernando Lopez, admitted to knowing he was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle. He was also in possession of shaved keys, according to the Pomona Police Department. An officer located the known stolen truck in the 1700 block of Gillette Road around 10:43 p.m. The officer followed the suspect onto the west I-10 freeway.
The suspect began driving erratically, likely after spotting the officer. A pursuit was initiated, according to the Pomona Police Department. Lopez crashed into the center divider on the west I-10 freeway near Grand Avenue and was arrested. Lopez was booked on suspicion of grand theft auto, felony evading and possession of burglary tools, Pomona Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A LaVerne woman was arrested Saturday after admitting to lifting a gold necklace from a Pomona pawn shop and committing the same crime in Chino. Marina Monique Ortiz, 18, is accused of stealing “an expensive gold necklace” from AJ’s Super Pawn, 496 E. Holt Ave., February 9. She allegedly pretended to be a customer and fled with the necklace when it was removed from a glass case, Pomona Police said.
Ortiz fled the business on foot and was last seen in a nearby neighborhood. Police somehow tracked down Ortiz to a La Verne home. She confessed to Pomona officers that not only did she take the gold necklace, but committed a similar crime in Chino, Pomona Police said. Ortiz apparently sold the necklace to purchase other items, Pomona Police said. Ortiz was booked on suspicion of grand theft and commercial burglary. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A man was arrested Wednesday after he rammed a Pomona Police officer’s patrol vehicle multiple times, rammed parked vehicles and slammed through a wall before fleeing on foot. The unidentified suspect was spotted near Mission Boulevard and Elm Street February 6. After finding the suspect parking the stolen Audi A3 in the stall of an automotive business in the 1500 block of East Mission, officers attempted a traffic stop.
The suspect was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, assault on an officer, vehicle theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – A Pomona man was arrested Monday after he was found driving a stolen vehicle, police said.
The incident unfolded around 1 p.m. at Garey Avenue and Mission Boulevard January 14. The vehicle’s license plate was checked and the SUV was reported stolen out of San Bernardino, according to Lt. Eddie Vasquez of the Pomona Police Department. Pomona Police Chief Michael Olivieri, who frequently patrols the Pomona streets, tracked down the stolen Ford Expedition to Kadota Avenue and East Grand Avenue several minutes later where, with the help of backup, the suspect was arrested, Vasquez said. Arrested was Jose Torres Jr., a 29-year-old Pomona man. He was booked on suspicion of grand theft auto. |
