Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Autopsies have yet to be performed on the man and woman found dead of apparent gunshot wounds in Covina Wednesday. Monica Ann Dominguez, 52, and Michael John Rivera, 62, were identified by Sarah Ardalani, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Rivera is the allegedly gunman. Ardalani listed Rivera as the reported suicide case. Dominguez is listed as the reported homicide.
Covina Police were called to the home in the 200 block of East Center Street around 4:46 p.m. February 13 to a call of a domestic fight an the sound of gunfire from a locked room in the apartment unit. Three adopted juveniles, grandchildren of one of the suspects, were inside the apartment when gunfire rang out. The juveniles were found safe at a neighbor’s home. Police discovered the bodies after breaching the locked door to the room. A handgun was recovered at the scene. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor TRAFFIC - Caltrans has rescheduled work that would have closed down all eastbound lanes of the I-10 freeway in Covina and San Dimas. Rain is in the forecast for Wednesday, February 13 and Thursday, February 15. The sign-removal project would shut down all eastbound lanes from Via Verde Avenue to the 57 freeway between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m. Wednesday Thursday and Friday. Overhead signs were scheduled to be removed, according to Caltrans. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - A teen murder suspect accused of stabbing his sister to death at their Claremont home four years ago will next appear in juvenile court. Nathaniel Douglas Geurts, who turns 18 this June, had his murder case transferred to juvenile court after a disposition of “dismissed/not prosecuted” was issued January 28, according to the criminal case summary provided by the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Geurts was 14 years old when he allegedly stabbed his sister Aspen Geurts, 15, to death at their home in the 300 block of Andover Drive November 4, 2015. Aspen was found unresponsive and was declared dead by Los Angeles County Firefighters.
Nathaniel was found walking away from the home, still carrying the kitchen knife allegedly used in the murder, according to the Claremont Police Department. Nathaniel pleaded not guilty Wednesday March 9, 2016. The teens were both students of Glendora High School. Nathaniel is scheduled to appear in juvenile court March 7, according to Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LA PUENTE, HACIENDA HEIGHTS - One man was hospitalized after being shot, an event that led deputies on reports of gun violence across La Puente and Hacienda Heights early Saturday. Deputies responded to three separate calls within a 50-minute span, according to Lt. James Long of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station. Industry deputies first responded to a call of a shooting occurring at City Lights Cocktail Lounge, 1257 S. Hacienda Blvd., at 1:16 a.m. The man was hospitalized and refused to give deputies information, Long said.
Industry deputies then responded to a report of shots fired towards a home in the 600 block of Unruh Street at 2:05 a.m. in La Puente. An occupant in a black sedan allegedly opened fire. Deputies searched, but could not find any physical evidence of a shooting, Long said. A resident reported a prowler in the 15000 block of Amar Road in West Valinda around 1:46 a.m. The suspect was seen pointing a handgun at the resident, Long said. No one was arrested from any of the incidents, Long said. The crashed vehicle was located near mile marker 18.87 and the Hidden Springs Picnic Ground. Authorities were called to the scene just after 1:34 p.m. February 9.
A tactical medic from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau was lowered down to the destroyed vehicle where a body was found. It does not appear anyone else died in the crash. A three-hour Sig Alert was issued for Angeles Forest Highway at mile marker 18.87 at 2:35 p.m. An update on the Sig Alert is not available. The California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner are investigating. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Police said a 19-year-old El Monte resident was carrying a cellphone and wore headphones as he walked through an activated railroad crossing and was struck by a westbound train February 7. Mauricio Kevin Moreno died at the scene of the collision in the 3200 block of North Cogswell Road just after 10 a.m.
Los Angeles-Bound train 319 collided with the pedestrian. The tracks between Baldwin Park and El Monte are closed, according to a statement issued by Metrolink. The train and its passengers were finally able to continue to Los Angeles two hours and 10 minutes behind schedule. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - Caltrans announced San Gabriel Canyon Road has reopened for residents and emergency vehicles, days after mud and rock made the road impassible. The road is open to residents and emergency vehicles only. The road block has been moved to mile marker 32.14, according to Caltrans. An estimated 40-foot high wall of mud and rock fell across the road February 4, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Campers from Coldbrook Campground and Crystal Lake were unable to leave down the roadway, which has been covering the road since a driver called to report the incident at around 10:35 p.m. Monday night, the CHP said. The driver who reported the rock and mud slide was traveling north when he saw a woman waving a flashlight, trying to signal for help. Her vehicle became stuck in the mess as she was driving southbound, the CHP said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - A vicim of vehicle theft is uninjured after a man she met in Azusa Wednesday attacked her and took her vehicle, a Sheriff’s lieutenant said. The victim met the man in Azusa through social media. The woman drove to the man in, where he then got behind the wheel and took both of them to Highway 39 at mile marker 26.91. During a hike along the river, the suspect attacked her and took her car, said Lt. Mark Skaggs of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. The woman called for help around 3:30 p.m. February 6.
The two met at San Gabriel Canyon Road and Mirador Drive in Azusa, Skaggs said. “They went for a walk down by the river and he shoved her into the water and then ran back up and stole the car,” Skaggs said. “She was able to flag down somebody who gave her a ride back down the hill where she was able to call us,” Skaggs said. Stolen was a black 2011 Toyota Prius. The suspect is still outstanding, Skaggs said. Campers from Coldbrook Campground and Crystal Lake are unable to leave down the roadway due to the mud and rock slide, which has been covering the road since a driver called to report the incident at around 10:35 p.m. Monday night, the CHP said. The wall of rock and mud is blocking Highway 39 just north of mile marker 33 in both north and southbound lanes, the CHP said.
The driver who reported the rock and mud slide was traveling north when he saw a woman waving a flashlight, trying to signal for help. Authorities are considering a long-term closure of the roadway Engineers will assess thew integrity of the asphalt, the CHP said. Caltrans and the CHP are coordinating evacuations. Yessel Guadalupe Lopez, 19, was last seen leaving her home around 10 p.m. February 3. She suffers from schizophrenia and has the mental capacity of an 8-year-old, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. She was last seen in the 12100 block of Pine Street.
Lopez is a Hispanic woman, 5 feet 2 inches tall, 175 pounds, has brown hair, brown eyes and wears braces. She was seen carrying a brown backpack.
