Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Authorities have named the man found dead near the westbound 210 freeway at Michillinda July 16. 35-year-old Thomas Jasper IV was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. His body was found in a crawlspace at the westbound 210 freeway at Michillinda Avenue.
Arcadia Firefighters arrived to the scene and declared Jasper dead at 10:59 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said. Jasper’s cause of death has been deferred, pending additional investigation.

REGION - The suspect who infamously broadcast a live Facebook video while he fired upon deputies in unincorporated Covina was sentenced to prison time in January.
Sean Vasquez, 22, pleaded guilty to seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer January 22, 2019. He was immediately sentenced to 30 years and eight months in state prison, according to Shiara Dávila-Morales, media chief for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. According to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation records and county booking records, as of February 21 Vasquez is serving time in the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran, after having been released from Wasco State Prison. On April 9, 2017, Deputies responded to a suspect firing at passing vehicles in the 16700 block of East Cypress Street in the unincorporated community of Vincent. As deputies arrived and contained the home, Vasquez fired a handgun in their direction multiple times -- he even fired at two deputies in circling helicopter. No one was injured in the shooting. Vasquez streamed live video as he fired at deputies while taking refuge in and around a home. Eventually, he surrendered without further incident. Originally, Vasquez was also charged with five counts of attempted murder. The five charges were eventually either dismissed or not prosecuted. Pamela Cross was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The cause of death has been deferred pending additional investigation. Cross was declared dead Sunday afternoon in a medical building parking lot at 50 Alessandro Pl. “She looks to have been the victim of an assault,” said Lt. Mark Goodman of the Pasadena Police Department. “We are investigating as a possible homicide.”
Goodman declined to disclose the nature of the injuries. There is no suspect description at this time. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - A vehicle has crashed over the side of Glendora Mountain Road and has ignited about a one-quarter acre brush fire. The collision was reported just after 5 p.m. at Glendora Mountain Road west of Glendora Ridge Road July 15. The vehicle crashed 100 feet over the side and became fully engulfed, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
The fire is moving uphill with a moderate rate of spread. The U.S. Forest Service has initiated a full brush response complete with aircraft. Tactical medics with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau are treating the driver for unspecified injuries. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - The death of a man found in the San Gabriel River May 11 was ruled accidental. Joseph Duran, 40, died from the combined effects methamphetamine and fentanyl, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
The body was found in the water near Peck Road and Durfee Avenue. Firefighters were called to the scene at 2:27 p.m., but left the location within 18 minutes. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Two people were rescued from the San Gabriel Riverbed Thursday morning after becoming stranded. The people were rescued just after Noon July 11 from the riverbed near the 100 block of Old San Gabriel Canyon Road. At least one of the patients were spotted clinging to a tree, according to a representative with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Sgt. Matthew Bodell of the San Dimas Sheriff's Station. described the victims as a 13-year-old child and his father. The rising river may have been caused by more water being released by nearby Morris Dam. Firefighters and their urban search and rescue team were dispatched along with a copter at 11:36 a.m. The people were lifted to the road and assessed by county fire paramedics. It is not immediately clear if the people were transported to a hospital for observation. Azusa Police and the San Dimas Sheriff's Station also responded. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - The California Highway Patrol arrested a carjacking and pursuit suspect after he fled across lanes of the 110 freeway south of the 91 freeway Tuesday. A victim called El Monte Police around 11:42 p.m. July 9 to report being carjacked on the I-10 freeway east of the 605 in Baldwin Park. El Monte officers located the vehicle, the driver refused to stop and fled south on the 605 freeway, according to Lt. Michael Buckhannon of the El Monte Police Department. The pursuit was turned over to the CHP. Officers from a handful of CHP stations chased the suspect as he drove through area freeways. The suspect attempted to take the south 110 freeway from the northbound 405, but lost control of the vehicle and crashed.
The suspect ran across north and southbound lanes of the 110 freeway and was caught a short time later, according to a written statement provided by Simeon Yarbrough of the California Highway Patrol South Los Angeles Area office. Arrested was Gabriel Lopez, 33, who was booked on suspicion of carjacking, kidnapping, grand theft and vehicle theft. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to the CHP. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - Two people were hoisted from a crashed vehicle that reportedly plummeted 200 feet over Angeles Crest Highway July 10. The crash was reported around 7 p.m. on Angeles Crest at mile marker 27. Two occupants were discovered and a Sheriff’s flight medic was lowered from a helicopter to assist, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Rescuers extricated both occupants who suffered undisclosed injuries and the two were flown to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena for treatment. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - A driver suffered from some scrapes after the vehicle they were driving plummeted over Glendora Mountain Road and Glendora Ridge Road Saturday. A passerby did not witness the crash, but heard it occur before 9:30 p.m. Ground crews and a helicopter arrived to the scene and the latter discovered the crashed vehicle, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
A paramedic was lowered to the victim to assess injuries. The driver was airlifted to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, a level-one trauma center, due to the distance the vehicle plummeted. The distance the vehicle fell was not disclosed. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor REGION - A preliminary magnitude 7.1 earthquake has rocked SoCal, centered nearly 11 miles north northeast of Ridgecrest, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake hit relatively close to where a magnitude 6.4 quake hit in Inyo County. Dr. Lucy Jones of Caltech said the 6.4 quake from July was a foreshock to today's temblor. "This was a M7.1 on the same fault as has been producing the Searles Valley sequence. This is part of the same sequence," Jones said via social media. SoCal law enforcement and fire agencies are performing critical facilities checks throughout their cities to ensure no damage has occurred. The quake received a preliminary 7.1. magnitude initially and was downgraded to a 6.9 before being upgraded to a 7.1. This story will be updated as information becomes available. |
