Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - A stabbing suspect found guilty on four felony counts will be spending 10 years plus life in prison in an attack against his girlfriend. Matthew Fay Echauri, 25, was sentenced Tuesday to time in state prison. The above sentence includes the possibility of parole, according to Venusse Navid of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Villalobos also imposed a 10-year protective order against Echauri, Navid said.
Echauri was found guilty this February on four felony counts: one count each of attempted murder and mayhem and two counts of dissuading a witness from reporting a crime with force and violence. The jury also found true that Echauri used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife, during the crime and that he inflicted great bodily injury, Navid said. Echauri stabbed his then 18-year-old girlfriend multiple times after an argument March 2, 2017 in her Temple City home. Two days into being taken into custody, Echauri called the girlfriend and threatened to harm her if she spoke to police. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES – The County DA has filed one count of murder Wednesday against the woman who allegedly stabbed her own son multiple times in a Covina townhouse. Xa Dinh Ngo, also known as Michelle Ngo, 39, faces one count of murder with a special allegation that she personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, according to Spokeswman Venusse Navid of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Ngo is scheduled for arraignment in Pomona Superior Court. She faces 26 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged. Ngo is accused of stabbing her toddler son, 2-year-old Alvis Puentes, on the second floor of their Covina townhome at 141 E. Italia St. January 11 around 3:30 a.m.
A Covina Police sergeant on patrol found a partially-clothed Ngo running down the road in the 300 block of North Second Avenue. Ngo tried to flee from officers, but was ultimately detained and found with blood splattered on her body. She alluded to a possible victim somewhere in town, but refused to speak further, Covina Police said. After Ngo was hospitalized, police learned her address, arrived to the location and found a small fire burning inside, Covina Police said. Police entered the home and discovered Puentes’ body. Ngo is scheduled for arraignment in Pomona Superior Court. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - A 51-year-old Commerce man was arrested Tuesday, hours after allegedly stabbing to death an Azusa man aboard a westbound Gold Line train.
Peter Munoz was booked on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail, according to Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Munoz was officially arrested at 11 p.m., according to Los Angeles County booking records, nearly 12 hours after the attack occurred. “The arrest comes after investigators conducted interviews of witnesses and viewed surveillance video in the area,” Schrader said. A motive for the killing is unknown. 62-year-old Xuezhong Bao was named as the victim by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Bao was stabbed at least once in the upper torso at or near the Irwindale Station, 16017 Avenida Padilla, some time before 11:30 a.m. November 27. It was unclear if he was stabbed on the platform, or inside the train. Bao and the suspect made their was westbound in a train that arrived at the Duarte/City of Hope Station. The suspect was detained. Bao died after attempts at CPR failed. Munoz is being held in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station jail and is awaiting a scheduled appearance in Alhambra Municipal Court Thursday, November 29. Alex Edward Evans, 30, is facing one count of murder with the allegation of using a knife as a deadly and dangerous weapon in the slaying of his 67-year-old mother, according to Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Evans allegedly called 9-1-1 around 9:16 p.m. and told the dispatcher he killed his mother inside her home in the 1100 block of north Mentor Avenue, Pasadena Police said. The dispatcher kept Evans on the phone until police arrived. He was ordered out of the home and was detained. Evans’ mother, Katrina Evans, was found dead with multiple stab wounds, Pasadena Police said. Evans faces 26 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged, Santiago said. Evans is being held in lieu of $2 million bail. Eduardo Marin, 48, pleaded no contest to four counts, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree burglary, person present, and cruelty to a child by endangering health. Marin is accused of breaking into his ex girlfriend’s West Covina home October 13, 2016 and stabbing her multiple times with their son present. A family member was injured after intervening, according to Sarah Ardalani of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Marin admitted to special allegations that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife, during the commission of the crime. Additionally, Marin admitted committing great bodily injury on the victim under circumstances involving domestic violence, Ardalani said. Marin fled the scene, but was caught by West Covina Police. Marin is scheduled to be sentenced August 13 and faces 20 years and six months to life in prison if convicted as charged. Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - The victim in a highly-publicized stabbing aboard a Montebello Bus Lines route stabbed April 8 died after a nearly two-month fight for his life.
The unnamed victim was stabbed aboard a bus in the 5700 block of Whittier Boulevard around 3:40 p.m. Three days later, Manuel Ortiz, 27, was arrested April 12 and booked in connection to the stabbing. A motive remains unknown, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Ortiz, a Los Angeles County transient, was arrested after being contacted by members of the public. In the wake of the victim’s death, Ortiz’s charges were upgraded to first-degree murder. His bail was set at $2 million. “It was a savage attack and one that caused us great concern,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell. “It was seemingly unprovoked, as the suspect walked towards the front of the bus, pulled a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times.” |
