Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ROSEMEAD – Calling Steppenwolf: A man claiming he needed a ride home after his friends ditched him allegedly stole a City of Santa Monica cart and decided to haul butt on the I-10 freeway July 3. Officers from the East Los Angeles California Highway Patrol Office responded to numerous calls of a golf cart doing 20 miles per hour on the east I-10 freeway west of the 710 freeway just before 5 a.m. The driver yielded after officers conducted a traffic stop, according to the CHP. Drivers reportedly had to swerve to avoid crashing into the utility vehicle. The driver ended on Columbia Street west of Del Mar Avenue. The cart, officers discovered, was a John Deere Utility Vehicle emblazoned with a City of Santa Monica seal, according to the CHP. “The driver stated his friends had ditched him and he needed a way to get home,” according to the CHP in a written statement. Ismael L. Fernandes, 27, was arrested and booked on suspicion of unlawful taking of a vehicle. Fernandes pleaded not guilty. He is scheduled to appear in the Alhambra Courthouse January 12, 2023, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records. Fernandes was released July 13 on his own recognizance, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ROSEMEAD - A crash, an escape on foot and a set of powerful teeth punctuated the night as deputies searched for the driver of a stolen vehicle March 1.
The suspect decided to start running through residential properties after he crashed while trying to get away from a deputy who discovered the vehicle the suspect was driving was reported stolen, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station. A patrol deputy saw the driver acting suspiciously Monday evening and checked the license plate. The suspect took a turn far too fast before the deputy could even initiate a traffic stop. The suspect crashed into a parked vehicle and a tree in the 9000 block of Garrett Street, according to the Sheriff’s Temple Station. A helicopter from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department aided by deputies from Pico Rivera, City of Industry and East Los Angeles assisted with a containment to keep the suspect from escaping the area. Additional help on four legs arrived in the form of a Sheriff’s K9 named Jack from the Special Enforcement Bureau. “Despite numerous warnings on loud speakers from both on the ground and in the air, the suspect still would not give up. The suspect was ultimately bit by K-9 “Jack” and was arrested for multiple charges, including vehicle theft with priors convictions and hit and run,” according to the Sheriff’s Temple Station. The van was taken from the 7700 block of Garvey Avenue after a man walked into the acupuncture business and took the key, said Lt. Frank Ruiz of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station. The vehicle was reported stolen around 6:35 p.m. It was unknown if the suspect was a customer prior to taking the van. A report was not yet available. A suspect description was also not available. |
