Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SAN DIMAS - An armed suspect escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash after robbing a Trader Joe’s cashier Monday night, a Sheriff’s lieutenant said. A man with a mask walked into the Trader Joe’s, 856 W. Arrow Hwy., just after 9:30 p.m. and produced a black gun from the backpack he was wearing and pointed the weapon at a cashier, according to Lt. Elisabeth Sachs of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. The store was apparently closed at 9 p.m. The suspect demanded cash and fled on foot once he received the money, Sachs told SGV CityWatch.
Sachs declined to disclose the amount of cash taken. The suspect was described as a 30-year-old Black man. He stood about 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighs 180 pounds and he wore a black hooded sweater, black pants and a face mask. He fled east on Cienega Avenue. The suspect remains at large, Sachs told SGV CityWatch. 32-year-old Joseph Michael Ramirez was found at a home in the 1800 block of Woodgate Avenue in West Covina September 2 where a handgun was recovered similar to the one used in the shooting, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies said. In the wake of the shooting, detectives identified Ramirez as a suspect. His car was found at a San Dimas motel August 31, but Ramirez was nowhere to be found. He was later located in West Covina, deputies said. Ramirez was formally charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office with a felony charge of attempted murder and firearms-related felonies, deputies said. Ramirez is accused of shooting a 36-year-old man who approached the vehicle he and a female companion were sitting in outside Charter Oak Liquor, 20040 Arrow Hwy., around 8:14 p.m., August 30. The victim stumbled into the liquor store and collapsed after being struck in the mid-torso area, according to Lt. Elisabeth Sachs of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. Ramirez is being held in lieu of $1 million bail. He made an initial appearance in court Friday. |
