CityWatch Editor BAKER, CALIFORNIA - A 13-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department died during an annual relay race in the Mojave Desert. The deputy suffered an undisclosed medical emergency while participating 2026 Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay. The deputy was given medical treatment at the scene. The Sheriff’s Department has yet to publicly disclose the deputy’s name. The cause of death is not immediately known and will likely be determined by a medical examiner. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Deputy’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of our beloved Deputy, a 13-year veteran, is felt across the entire LASD family,” according to a statement issued by the Sheriff’s Department. The Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay is a two-day, 20-stage race that covers 120 miles and involves law enforcement agencies from all over the country, inand the world,, and 10,000 participants, from runners, support staff, family members to guests.
