​Sheriff’s Dept. Names Deputy Who Died During Race

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department named the 30-year-old deputy who died after suffering a medical emergency during a relay race.

Levi Vargas died March 28. He leaves behind his wife, parents, siblings, and extended family.

“Vargas joined the Department in 2015 as a Custody Assistant and later graduated from Academy Class 413.  He served in several assignments throughout his career, most recently at San Dimas Station,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in a written statement.

A procession for Vargas is slated to began at 4 p.m. and end at Forest Lawn in Covina.

Vargas suffered an undisclosed medical emergency while participating in the 40th Annual Baker to Vegas Relay, which takes place in the Mojave Desert.
