Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SAN GABRIEL – The San Gabriel Police Department announced a DUI checkpoint scheduled for Friday, December 17.
The checkpoint is scheduled to take place from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday, December 18. It will take place at an undisclosed location, but the location is usually chosen based on historical DUI crashes and arrests, according to the San Gabriel Police Department. “The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired,” according to the San Gabriel Police Department in a written statement. Driving under the influence does not just involve alcohol and marijuana. Certain prescription and over the counter medication can impair driving. Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the San Gabriel Police Department. Checkpoint funding was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
