Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SIERRA MADRE - The California Department of Fish and Wildlife continues to investigate the bear attack that left an 84-year-old transient wounded. “Due to an ongoing Department of Fish and Wildlife investigation, the gate to Chantry Flat was closed and locked this morning and must remain closed and locked through Sunday morning,” according to the Sierra Madre Police Department. The transient, who sleeps in the Chantry Flats area, was wounded April 23 after being attacked by the bear, according to Sgt. Charles Kamchamnan of the Sierra Madre Police Department.
The transient apparently extended his arm to the bear to get the bear to sniff him when it attacked, causing wounds to the transient’s left arm and his face. The transient fled down the foothills -- the bear apparently followed him down to Arno Drive. Police were called to the 1200 block of Arno Drive around 11:24 p.m. after a resident called on a suspicious person ringing the doorbell. The transient was going from door to door to get help, Kamchamnan said. Police were initially told the bear is estimated to be 200 to 300 pounds. The transient was treated at the scene and released by Sierra Madre firefighters. |
