The fire has scorched one-half acre of Whittier Narrows near Durfee Avenue and Santa Anita Avenue. Most other fire units en route have been canceled, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire is roughly 70 percent contained. Firefighters already on scene will remain to work the fire. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SOUTH EL MONTE - A tree fire near the right shoulder of the eastbound 60 freeway briefly closed a traffic lane in the 60 freeway Wednesday.
Flames were visible on the eastbound side of the 60 freeway at Peck Road just before 4 a.m. April 15, According to the California Highway Patrol. Los Angeles County fire fighters requested The No. 4 lane and right shoulder be blocked by the CHP while they extinguish the flames. A 45-minute Sig Alert was issued for the No. 5 lane at 4:23 a.m., the CHP said. The stabbing occurred in the 2500 block of Santa Anita Avenue around 5:40 p.m. The victim was taken to an area hospital and was pronounced dead, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. No further information is available. Anyone with information on the stabbing is urged to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SOUTH EL MONTE - The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department scheduled a DUI/driver license checkpoint to begin Friday, July 12 at 6 p.m. The checkpoint, to be held at an undisclosed location, will last until 2 a.m. Saturday, July 13. DUI checkpoint locations are based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Funding for this checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SAN GABRIEL RIVER - Deputies are conducting a death investigation after a deceased person was found in the San Gabriel River Saturday. The body was found in the water near Peck Road and Durfee Avenue sometime before 2:30 p.m.
Deputies are working to determine if the body is in Industry Sheriff’s Station or Temple Sheriff’s Station jurisdiction, according to Sgt. Durante of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 2:27 p.m., but left the location within 18 minutes. Durante did not know if the victim is male or female, adult or minor. The man’s body was discovered around 6:18 a.m. near Garvey Avenue and Rosemead Boulevard. Firefighters and Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.
Homicide detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the death, according to Lt. Williams of the Sheriff's Temple Station. An autopsy is pending. The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to coroner Public Information Officer Sarah Ardalani. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SOUTH EL MONTE - A driver was carjacked at gunpoint near Klingerman and Continental Avenue Wednesday night, deputies said. The carjacking occurred around 11 p.m. Two men took the victim’s 2016 Honda Accord. The victim’s cellphone was also taken, One of the suspects was armed with a black handgun, according to deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station. The Accord was seen being driven away westbound.
Both suspects appeared 25 years old. One suspect appears to be 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 180 pounds, has short black hair and wore a grey hooded sweatshirt. There was no description for the second suspect. Written by AARON CASTREJON CItyWatch Editor SOUTH EL MONTE - At least two suspects took a man’s grey Kia Rio from him Wednesday morning, a Sheriff’s lieutenant said. The carjacking occurred just after 12:30 a.m. March 27 on Klingerman Street near Santa Anita Avenue. One of the suspects brandished a handgun during the crime, according to Lt. Frank Ruiz of the Sheriff’s Temple Station. The suspects were seen driving away eastbound on Klingerman, Ruiz said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SOUTH EL MONTE - Two people are stuck in a tree surrounded by water and can’t get down inside the Whittier Narrows Recreational Area, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported. The victims are surrounded by about four to five feet of standing water, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. Firefighters were called at 12:23 p.m. to the 100 block of North Durfee Avenue. Firefighters initially called for an inflatable boat to aid in the rescue, but a helicopter has been summoned to hoist the victims from the tree. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SOUTH EL MONTE - Two armed men escaped with a wallet and cash in a daytime robbery Tuesday. The robbery occurred in the 9500 block of Garvey Avenue around 7:45 p.m. February 5. One man with a handgun, another with what was described as a rifle, robbed their victim of a wallet containing cash, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station. It was unclear if the guns were replica or real.
One 20-something suspect, described as wearing a black shirt and green cargo pants, escaped in a white vehicle. The second suspect, described as in his 20s and wearing dark clothing, fled in a black vehicle. |
