Police officers and paramedics attempted to save the man, but he passed away at the scene in the 1600 block of South Meridian Avenue December 16. First responders were called at 7:51 p.m., according to the South Pasadena Police Department. “During the investigation, several items of evidentiary value were located. Given the nature and scope of the investigation, the South Pasadena Police Department is working in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department,” according to the South Pasadena Police Department in a written statement. In that same statement, the South Pasadena Police Department described the unconscious male suffering from “medical distress,” but did not elaborate further. This reporter heard the response to the home on South Meridian and heard that the victim suffered a large laceration to his head. It is not yet publicly clear what led to the man’s death. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SOUTH PASADENA - Firefighter paramedics declared a woman dead on the Gold Line platform Sunday evening, a South Pasadena Police sergeant said. Police initially responded to a medical emergency call on the platform, 905 Meridian Ave., September 6 around 6 p.m. A man was reportedly screaming for help, prompting a call to police, according to Sgt. Jim Valencia of the South Pasadena Police Department. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
The victim, only described as a Black woman possibly in her 50s, has yet to be identified, pending notification of family, according to Investigator Nani Cholakians of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority provided bus bridges while train traffic to and from the station was halted for several hours. The rider, a 38-year-old San Gabriel man, suffered life-threatening injuries after crashing at Arroyo Drive and Pasadena Avenue around 10:52 p.m. Sunday, August 16. The rider was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, according to the South Pasadena Police Department. The rider was last listed in critical, but stable condition, South Pasadena Police said. There was apparently no other vehicle involved in the crash, South Pasadena Police said. Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information on the collision is urged to call the South Pasadena police department at 626-403-7297. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SOUTH PASADENA - Police arrested a man who allegedly set three brush fires along Arroyo Drive early Sunday. Jesus Vargas, 34, was found and detained southbound on Arroyo Drive near Sterling Place. A resident who interrupted an initial arson attempt confirmed the detainee was the arson suspect, according to the South Pasadena Police Department. A resident witnessed a man attempting to ignite brush with a cigarette lighter in the 300 block San Pascual Avenue. The suspect fled on foot after the resident went outside to see who the suspect was, according to the South Pasadena Police Department.
Around 12:39 a.m. May 3, firefighters responded to Arroyo Drive to fight the arson fires. A resident in the 300 block of St. Albans and a driver on the 110 freeway both called to report fire on a hillside, according to the South Pasadena Police Department. “There were three separate fires burning simultaneously across from the homes in the 300 block, 400 block and the 500 block of Arroyo Drive,” South Pasadena Police said in a written statement. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames. No one was injured and no damage was reported. The arson is being investigated by the Arson Division of the San Marino Fire Department. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SOUTH PASADENA - A South Pasadena Police officer administered a nasal spray to a man suffering a likely overdose October 3. The man was on the floor, struggling to breathe. Pasadena Police Officer Randy Wise administered four milligrams of nalaxone to the man until he regained consciousness, South Pasadena Police said. Police responded to a 9-1-1 call from the man’s girlfriend at 1:27 a.m. to the 1500 block of Bank Street for a possibly Heroin overdose.
“The subject regained consciousness and was transported to the hospital for treatment. By the time he arrived at the hospital he was alert and able to answer questions,” South Pasadena Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SOUTH PASADENA - Firefighters are investigating the cause of a blaze that eventually damaged two homes August 21. South Pasadena firefighters were dispatched just after 3 p.m. to a home in the 700 block of Charter Oak Street to smoke and flames through the roof. The flames then spread to the roof of a neighboring home, according to the South Pasadena Fire Department. No one was injured. Two pet cats were rescued while three others were unaccounted for, the South Pasadena Fire Department said.
Firefighters from surrounding departments were called to assist, including Alhambra, Pasadena, Los Angeles, San Marino and San Gabriel. Firefighters went into a defensive mode after the roof at one home collapsed. Moderate damage and total loss of a detached garage were reported at the other home, the South Pasadena Fire Department said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SOUTH PASADENA - Police saved a man Saturday afternoon who allegedly overdosed on Oxycodone. Officers used Naloxone on the 21-year-old man who was found down and unresponsive in the 1100 block of Indiana Avenue before 1 p.m. May 25. Officers found the man not breathing and with no apparent pulse, according to the South Pasadena Police Department. After administering the opioid-inhibiting nasal spray, officers began CPR until South Pasadena firefighters could continue care. “Upon departure to a local hospital, the victim was conscious and breathing on his own,” South Pasadena Police said.
This was the first deployment of Naloxone for South Pasadena Police, according Sgt. Tony Abdalla. The department received approval to implement Naloxone March 12, 2019 by the Los Angeles County Medical Emergency Services Agency. All South Pasadena officers received training in deploying Naloxone. Firefighters, Inspectors Examine South Pasadena Home Heavily Compromised by Falling Hillside3/12/2019 Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SOUTH PASADENA - A gas line was ruptured and the foundation at a home was damaged by a shifting hillside Tuesday. The hillside began giving away around 7:18 p.m. at 1853 Hanscom Drive. The two-story home is still intact. A few nearby residents have been evacuated as a precaution, according to the South Pasadena Police Department. Authorities are in the process of yellow-tagging other affected homes and are recommending those residents leave. |
