Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A young adult female was killed after a driver hit her near a West Covina intersection Wednesday night.
The collision occurred at the northeast corner of Nogales and Amar Road sometime before 7 p.m. The victim was either in the crosswalk or was hit when the vehicle jumped the curb, according to Lt. Ron Allen of the West Covina Police Department in a social media post. A second collision left two other young adult females injured at Cameron and Pacific avenues. The injuries received included a head injury and compound leg fracture, but it it unclear which victim sustained which injury. Allen was unavailable to answer calls for information. THe victims in the latter crash were taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. The drivers in both crashes remained at each scene. It is unclear if alcohol, drugs, or distracted driving played a role in the collisions. Police and firefighters received 9-1-1 calls of screams for help in the 3200 block of Pebblebrook Road around 12:19 a.m. After initially being told the screams could not be pinpointed, police discovered the man in the flood control channel, according to Cpl. Rudy Lopez of the West Covina Police Department. The man was found hanging onto a cement wall of the Walnut Creek Wash, standing in two-foot-deep water. A helmet and safety, as well as a 40-foot-long West Covina Police K9 leash, which was used to help hoist the stranded man, Lopez said. “The victim … said he originally climbed down into the wash to retrieve a bicycle he saw there. When he entered, waters from the evening’s rain began rushing through the wash, dragging the victim for a short distance until he grabbed onto the wall,” Lopez said. The man was uninjured and released at the scene. The body was found in the 4100 block of South Sentous around 7:19 a.m., according to Lt. Travis Tibbetts of the West Covina Police Department. The person is believed to be male and may have been in the vehicle for more than one day, Tibbetts said. It is unclear if the death was natural or a homicide. Tibbetts was unsure of what type of injuries, if any, the victim sustained. |
