The fire was confined to one side of the home in the 1400 block of East Workman Avenue and firefighters kept the fire from extending into the home, according to the West Covina Fire Department. “The resident evacuated before Fire Department arrival and was transported to a local hospital with burn injuries,” the West Covina Fire Department said in a written statement. The resident’s dog perished in the fire, the West Covina Fire Department said. The unidentified suspect was spotted sitting in a vehicle by a West Covina Police officer assigned to the US Marshal Service Pacific Southwest Region Task Force in the 700 block of North Sunset Avenue, the Sheriff’s Department said. The shooting occurred just after 12:30 p.m. “The suspect was struck multiple times in the upper torso and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a written statement. The shooting took place in the 700 block of North Sunset Avenue November 22. The suspect died at the scene. No deputies were injured, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The U.S. Marshal Service may be involved in the events that led to the police shooting, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s radio traffic. No other details are available. Brayan Castellanos-Matute, a 20-year-old Artesia man, was allegedly found naked in the victim’s bed after he broke in. The suspect fled before police arrived, but after collecting evidence and following investigative leads, police identified and cuffed him, according to the West Covina Police Department. Matute was booked on suspicion of residential burglary, and assault to commit rape. The incident unfolded around 3 a.m. in the 100 block of South Barranca Avenue. “The victim was awoken by the suspect, who was found to be naked in her bed. The victim was able to flee and contact the West Covina Police Department. Officers arrived, however, the suspect had fled. The suspect was unknown to the victim,” the West Covina Police Department said in a written statement. A search warrant was executed at 3 p.m. November 11 and Matute was arrested. He remains jailed in lieu of $1 million bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina courthouse Monday, November 15, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Officers responded to 3033 E. Valley Blvd. around 5:23 a.m. November 3 and found a vehicle struck a wall. The only occupant inside the vehicle was declared dead at the scene, according to Lt. Tony Cortina of the West Covina Police Department. West Covina Police traffic investigators are on scene determining the cause. It is not yet publicly clear how or why the collision occurred. |
